Assessment SuggestionsStudents are assessed according to teacher and student created rubrics appropriate to grade level standards and targets. Teachers and students will assess continually throughout the project.
Preparation and DurationThere are many different aspects to prepare for to complete this project. Teaching reading and researching skills is the basis for this project. To complete the claymation aspect of the project, boxes and art supplies need to be collected for the dioramas. Nondrying clay and materials to create the animal body frames are also needed. To make the frames, we used styrofoam balls, pipe cleaners, cellophane wrap, aluminum foil, tape and other little miscellaneous pieces. Enlisting the help of the art teacher will speed the entire process along. The length of time to complete the project will vary from group to group, teacher to teacher. Research for second graders is a very time consuming project. Dioramas should take 2-3 class periods. Animal body frames will probably take 1-2 class periods. Covering the frames with clay will also take 1-2 class periods. Taking of the pictures will take about 20 minutes per group. Creating iMovies takes 1-2 class periods. From start to finish, this project lasts about 6-9 weeks.
