10. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring - Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, is a stunning fantasy epic, replete with sweeping panoramas and an eloquent score.  The film has human interest, a layered story, and vivid characters.  Indeed, the film is ambitious, and it succeeds gracefully.

9. Bridget Jones's Diary - In Bridget Jones's Diary, Sharon Maguire's crafts warm and textured film.  It is also an emotionally rewarding film with carefully etched characers.  Starring in my 9th pick for the second straight year, Renee Zellweger is charming and enjoyable at the lead.  Furthermore, 'Bridget Jones' is a hilarious motion picture that keeps its audience laughing throughout its duration.

8. Ghost World - Terry Zwigoff's Ghost World is a carefully wrought and quirky motion picture.  Indeed, Ghost World is a unique film with wildly eccentric characters and poignant dialogue.  It has moments of hilarity, and contains intelligent social commentary.  Thora Birch is well cast, and delivers a terrific performance.  Moreover, Steve Buscemi is excellent.

7. Amelie - Audrey Tautou is enchanting at the lead of Amelie, a charming French concoction.  The film has abundant humor, and a beautiful appearance.  Amelie contains a delightful score by Yann Tiersen, and fantastic cinematography by Bruno Delbonnel.  Jean-Pierre Jeunet crafts a joyous and affecting film in Amelie.

6. The Closet - Francis Veber is one of the best comedy writers working in the world today.  In The Closet, he writes and directs a delightful and sensitive comedy.  The film is very mature, and it depicts complex characters.  It is also a hilarious film, with memorable moments.  Daniel Auteuil and Gerard Depardieu give marvelous performances in this French farce.

5. The Endurance: Shackleton's Legendary Antartic Expedition - George Butler's The Endurance: Shackleton's Legendary Antartic Expedition is a powerful documentary.  It has stirring narration and intimate details of the expedition.  The film meticulously combines film and photographs from the original expedition with modern footage of the beautiful Antartic region.

4. Startup.com - Chris Hegedus and Jehane Noujaim craft an intense and emotional documentary in Startup.com.  In this motion picture the joys and struggles of the company come to extraordinary life.  The film works as a microcosm for the dip in the United States economy.  It also explores the relationship between the two leaders of the company with thoughtful depth.

3. A Beautiful Mind - Russell Crowe is astonishing as John Forbes Nash, in this highly intelligent and emotionally resonant motion picture.  Jennifer Connelly is also remarkable as his loving wife.  Ron Howard's direction is impressive, and Akiva Goldsman's screenplay is thoughtful.  A Beautiful Mind is a powerful depiction of a mental illness, and it is an accomplished piece of art.

2. Waking Life - Richard Linklater crafts a wonderfully creative and flowing film in Waking Life.  Indeed throughout its duration it holds the viewer mesmerized by its beautiful depiction of a dream.  Linklater is careful to add a plethora of humor and warm dialogue to the film.  The ending is haunting and powerful, and it leaves the viewer very fulfilled.

1. Moulin Rouge! - Frenzied, wild, crazy, but in shocking control, Baz Luhrmann's created a masterpiece in Moulin Rouge!  The film exhausts the viewer with copious imagery, and haunting musical numbers.  Nicole Kidman gives a masterful performance, and Ewan McGregor is wonderful as her optimistic lover.  And who could forget Jacek Koman's staggering rendition of "Roxanne"?
