Ok, I'm gonna start this page off with a HUGE thank you to Tavie!! With out whom, this page would not be possible! (Pretty soon I'm going to have to make a "Tribute to Tavie" page! :-)) I'm so glad/grateful she shared her experience and is allowing me to post part of it up here on the site! You see, Tavie and a few friends were invited to go see a rehersal for the show back in Febuary and below you will find a bit of what she shared with me, including a few pictures!! I'm really glad she's letting me share this on the site because it gives a lot more insight into the show!!
In her own words:They went through the whole show, and to my ears, their singing was flawless. The harmonies almost made me well up (I am a bit of a nerd, I don't know if you knew that;) and Gina and I were gloating because we love showtunes but Cheryl, being a normal person, doesn't, so we had sort of "tricked" her into listening to songs from "Cabaret" and "Chorus Line" and all that. But she had a great time too. The show is VERY funny, full of wickedness and lampoonery. They went through all their lines, giving us as full of an experience as possible. They all have a different style of singing which complemented one another wonderfully; Tracey's voice was slightly softer and sweeter than the others, which went well with her character, a ditzy stripper; Laura's voice was more in the style of a brassy old-timey Broadway comedienne, and her spastic solo was one of the funniest things in the show. (She has a VERY strong voice and was able to make her songs both beautiful AND funny.) Pinky's voice is achingly beautiful; she managed to make me enjoy a Prince song. (I don't care for Prince.) Now that's something.
And Crissy's voice is just other-worldly-- it's strong, it's angelic, it's amazing-- it's almost other-worldly. She takes one's breath away. You know all this. It was just such a damn treat to be able to hear it close up.
After the first song, "Maybe this Time", the three of us were unsure whether they'd appreciate us applauding (too disruptive?) and so we sort of hesitatingly held our hands apart and whispered "Woo!" and Crissy said, "It's okay if you want to applaud" and then we broke into wild cheers.
I especially love that the show is about backup singers getting their turn at the front. There's a great line about them becoming "the graverobbers of show business". There are a LOT of great lines, actually, and Crissy has this mini-monologue about how one day all breasts will be fake and won't even require women anymore... the imagery had us doubled over.
Oh! After Tracy's solo, she looked at us sitting in the corner and said, "Dave Foley wrote this physical bit for me where I spill my pills all over the floor"-- and she mimed spilling pills and we all hooted and woo'ed! because she had so POINTEDLY referenced "DAVE FOLEY" for our benefit. She described how a film was to play at one point and mentioned that hers starred "Dave Foley" (or was that Laura? I can't remember now-- dammit, I have to see the show!) ANYWAY, after that, everyone tried to one-up each other by describing more and more outlandish celebrities starring in their films, and the band (who were also fantastic!) got in on it; by the time it got to Pinky's solo, one of them deadpanned, "James Spader and Molly Ringwald" and we all just about died laughing.
At another point, there's a line, "Oh, yeah, and Katrina was just a light breeze" and the three of us just went "OooOOOOOH!" like they had gotten off a really good dis, and the four of them AND the band burst out laughing. It was very silly and we felt so privileged and pleased to be allowed to witness it all.
