It literaly means 13. The 13 can mean many things. One of the meanings is 13 directions. These are: N-E-S-W, the 4 corners, Rise-Fall, Push-Pull & Center. It also teaches rapid movement. It introduces T-stance, Chinto stance (reverse-T), Cat stance & Sanchin stance. 4. Seiunchin Kata From Goju-ryu. Meaning grab, pull, attack. Master Shimabuku said Niahanchi was the mother of Isshin-ryu. This kata teaches the niahanchi stance(toe in stance) & toe together stance, fighting opponents at 45 degree angles and the bone block. Master Shimabuku taught this as a night fighting kata. All techniques can be used for day or night, but there are many techniques taught within this kata that would be beneficial for night fighting. 9. Sunsu Master Shimabuku's Kata. He got the name from an eku dance his grandfather used to perform. It contains techniques from the Basic Excersises and all 7 of the other Isshin-ryu Kata. Master Shimabuku's son Shinso, told Sensei 4 of the 5 senses could be enhanced from the practice of Sunsu and the other sense is taught in Seisan kata. 10. Sanchin From Goju-ryu. Means three battles, the battle of mind, body & breath(air). Sanchin is the father of Isshin-ryu. Master Shimabuku said Niahanchi's the mother, Sanchin's the father and Isshin-ryu is the baby. San-chin is prolonged chinkuchi (bone, muscle & sinew-the cultivation of enery through proper control and body mechanics). Sanchin can be done for health & combat. 11. | We teach & practice a few kata from other Okinawan styles. We do this for comparative purpose as well as it beneficial to practice other concepts of Karate. Master Shimabuku said "All bottles are good." 1. Chuden Kata From Shorin-ryu, emphasizes the one knuckle punch. 2. Uechi Sanchin From Uechi-ryu. This San-chin is combat oriented and uses spear thrusts. This is the way it is done in China. 3. Katagwa 1 Advincula-do 4. Katagwa 2 This and Katagwa1 are Sensei's Kata. He combined all of the styles he has learned into these 2 kata. He originaly used these kata for his Hindiandi Gung-fu students. To show the influence of 2 of the styles he has learned, he begins with a hindiandi bow, and ends in a standard Okinawan bow. Both of the kata utilize the proppeler, a technique used to cover the center and put the attacker in a "preffered position" | Okinawan Kobudo |
