| Doggystyle Records Snoop Dogg is still signed to Master P's No Limit Label but he is also the CEO of his own company, Doggstyle Records. Snoop teamed up with TVT Records, part of the independent TVT Label Group, to distribute Doggstyle albums. As you probably know, he's seen the darkside of the record biz and he said that, unlike those that were in charge at Deathrow, he gladly breaks bread with his peeps. "First of all, all of my artists on Doggstyle Records will get 100% of their publishing. So, you won't see a record where Snoop gets a part of the publishing if I didn't have a part in the song. That's the freedom that I think is unheard of in this industry. I'm just trying to make new rules in the new millennium. Also, all of my artists can leave when they want and they can do what they want. It's no contract or seven album deal. It's when you're ready to leave then you can roll out with my blessings on the situation. Basically all record labels are the new slavery. If you're on Doggstyle you're not in slavery. We're the only label where you get your publishing right out the gate. There's nobody on our label trying to manage you or telling you they're going to manage you. You make your own decisions. The only thing that I ask is that my people let me lead and direct in the studio because I have the background and I know what the hell I'm doing. It's a family thing." Tha Eastsidaz, the first group Snoop presented, are now platinum. These Long Beach, CA natives showed the world that the LBC is an up and coming bastion of Hip-Hop talent. The group consists of Tray Deee and Goldie Loc and they want folks to know the true meaning behind a west coast group being called The Eastsidaz. "The eastside is usually the slums, the bottom, the lowest part of a city," Tray Deee told us. "People on the eastside usually have to work hard and struggle for what they get. There's nice homes on the westside. The northside usually consists people that have a lot of money and nice homes and such. On the Eastside you gotta be on your Ps and Qs or you might be caught slippin." The second group from Doggystyle Records, Doggy's Angels, released their debut album, Pleezbalevit, November 21. The all-female group consisting of Kola, Big Chan, and Coniyac are also natives to Los Angeles and Long Beach. The group's first single, Baby If You're Ready, features Doggystyle Record's first R&B artist, Toi. Doggy's Angels have already performed at a number of places such as MTV's Direct Effect and MAD TV's soundstage. More infomation on Doggy's Angels can be found in there interview. Snoop's goals & plans for his company: "Now is the time for me to have a record label because I've been a player for a long time and have played the game very well. I hope to give the artists on my label knowledge of the business game of rap, dealing with everything from publishing to royalties." "I feel like the direction I'm going in is good for people to follow. If I can lead the whole rap community, why can't I lead a whole record label?" "I looked at the talent in my community as people who needed an opportunity to shine. We got to keep it creative." "With Doggstyle Records, people are going to understand that Snoop Dogg is more than just a rapper." |
