Religion in the World

The main population of [insert name later] has to follow the monotheistic teaching of the Saint. Scholars believe that the Saint appeared around year 0 of the Nesmeeistic calendar and started the technological and magical revolutions. Before this time there were only barbaric tribes fighting over the plains. The saint came with outstanding knowledge of all things great and small. He saw great promise in the Bejorin tribe and started teaching these people the ways of magic. This small tribe became powerful and with the magical tricks the developed they could now decimate other tribes. This is not all the saint taught these people, he taught them about the wheel and how to make carts. He showed them how to tame animals and helped these people settle into a city. The city prospered and the saint when on to other tribes showing those the way.

The saint taught other things as well besides magic. He showed the people the way to live and wrote it down in a large tomb which still to this day is kept in the tower of Bejorin. These people learned that there was more to life than just the tribal ways. They abandoned the tribal gods and followed the saints teachings of goodness and prosperity. <

Things were good for the common man for quite some time. Prosperity reigned and the pagan cults were sent into the hills. In 1137 things began to change a new Religion came via boats from the south. The followers of Katar, which taught holiness through warfare, carved into those who followed the saint. The church then began to militarize and the Knights of Light were born. These men fought back, sending back those of Katar. Then once again the Church remained in power in the realm.

In 1897 things began to change, a new movement was coming to the powerful church. There were those inside the church that believe that the movements of war had tarnished the saints teaching and strove to return to the days when there was no war, where people lived in peace and prosperity. They wished to live by example and help their fellow man. A great debate raged in the Church, these renewed followers considered themselves to be Orthodox followers of the Saint. They began to trickle out of the Holy City and into the provinces, especially the provinces in the west.

By 2020 a great revolt started in the western provinces who wished to be separate from the Holy City. They wanted control over their own destinies and not pay homage to the church with they money just their devoted hearts. The Church realized that these would fall into the pagan hands if they did not act quickly and made peace with these People and let them have their kingdoms but the kingdoms would still have Monasteries and Cathedrals throughout them. The Unorthodox church then began to harbor Knights of Light to ensure that laws were followed. They began to reign through influence instead of directly.

The world now stands with the Unorthodox church still holding armies within its Holy Kingdom and spread out in the Monasteries and Cathedrals of the world. There is said to be a dark presence about in their ranks but none will know for sure.

Gaming Terms

Two sections of the Church:
Orthodox Believe that salvation is found in peace. People should show love to their enemies and help those around them. An orthodox believer is more likely to show love to a person to convert them than violence.
Unorthodox - Believe that salvation is for a limited time only. They believe that some people will only convert at the point of a sword. They desire to destroy any religion that is not the Saint.

In gaming terms a cleric of either church can choose two domains of their choice showing the devotion to two particular aspects of the faith. They can be of any alignment because the patron god does not have an alignment that anyone knows. Also, clerics of the saint are immune to any know alignment spell cast upon them.

A Paladin of either church will follow the laws of the church to the tee. They might have some ethical issues with some choices the church makes but will usually follow orders knowing that the church is more knowledgeable than they are.

A cleric or paladin of different sides of the church disagree with each other on issues of theology but will willingly work together for the greater good, as long as they both agree on the greater good. There has never been a civil war on faith and the unorthodox believers do not show any indication of starting one.

Pagans - There are many pagan gods found in the outlining country. Many choose to give lip service to the saint but follow something else in their homes at night. A cleric of a pagan god can choose two domains that fit his god and he/she also will take on the alignment of his god.

Followers of Katar - These are followers of the god Katar. The clerics see war as a holy thing. They fight to conquer. Clerics of Katar can choose two domains of their choice and are also proficient in the scimitar. These clerics can take on any alignment they wish.
