| Late in 1999 the quilting group that I was President of went on their annual Christmas trip to a place called Bungaree Station. It is situated in what is called the mid north of the state near the town of Clare. This is a wine growing area but also a cereal growing area and wool growing area. Bungaree is a sheep farm and also now a place where you can stay as a tourist. They also cater for conventions and workshops for business. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| To the right you can see a picture of the old wool shed where they still shear sheep and pack wool for market. Here they cater lunches and it was here we had a three course meal surrounded by the history of the station. The food was excellant and the history presentation afterwards was informative. Afterwards we were treated to a guided tour of the station and an explanation of the various buildings and their history. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Here we are in the wool shed having lunch. Good Food and good company and lots of laughs and of course discussion about quilts made, planned, being made or finished as well as the UFO's that quilters all tend to have! | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| As I said the shed is still used to shear sheep in the season. At the back of the shed they have preserved the old shearing area. It is no longer in use but you can see the original shingles on the roof and the aged jarrah wood floor. The smell is definitely sheepy and there is that wonderful lanolin wool smell pervading the whole area. They still pen the sheep in this area but they now shear in a more modern position with special slings to protect the shearer's back. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Bungarree Station also has the most beautiful chapel built on the site by the first owner. He used to hold services for his staff every Sunday and in the end built a beautiful church with all the trimmings for his staff and had the Church of England consecrate and come and minister at it. The problem being his staff wouldn't use it because they were all "Chapel" or non-conformists!!!! However it remained open and in the care of the family until a few years ago where it was given to the Anglican Church of Australia. Services are still held there by the clergy of the region. Here are some pictures of the church and it's wonderful glass. |
