Page layout #1

Page layout and typography are the two most important design aspects. The basic elements of good page design are:

·        Consistency

·        Simplicity

·        Variety

·        White space

·        Headlines

·        Graphics

·        Proportion and balance

·        Fonts

·        Typography

Page layout refers to the 'skeleton' of the page. Decisions on how many columns, size and orientation of paper, whether the paper will be folded, where the graphics will be placed etc.

Gridlines are non-printing vertical and horizontal lines the guide the placement of text and graphics. Greeked text is simulated text used to show the position of the real text on the page. It speeds up the graphic display on the computer whilst positioning is being carried out.

Inconsistencies in a publication will distract the reader. Once a font has been decided, stick to it for the majority of the publication. Too many effects in a publication will not achieve the objective. Three special effects per page is a rule often applied. Variety is needed to make publications more interesting but too much variety may not achieve the objective.

White space (blank area) is used to give the eye a rest and draw attention to certain features on a page. Margins are an example of white space. Wide margins will result in a lighter and brighter look to a page. Newspapers have little white space as it is not economic and it relies of the readers desire for information.

A good headline will attract the readers attention. Subheads draw the attention down to the text of the story. Too many headlines or the wrong size will not achieve the purpose. On an A4 page there is only room for one headline. A headline that is too large may distract from the text.
