Clipboard can be used to save pictures during cut/paste operations.

 

Screen capture uses this clipboard.

 

Working within windows, ALT+PRINTSCREEN, saves the screen to the clipboard. Working in either worprocessor or paint/draw packages, EDIT/PASTE then puts the captured screen in the document as a picture.

 

Embedding pictures allows you to use the editing command from one application within another.
