Classification of Computers
A computer is
classified as a supercomputer, mainframe, minicomputer or microcomputer,
according to its power and capablilities.
A supercomputer is
the fastest, most powerful and expensive type of computer.
A mainframe computer
is a very powerful computer that is able tp process vast amountts of data very
quickly. Time sharing is enabled by a main frame betwween many terminals.
Minicomputers are
powerful general purpose computers.
Microcomputers are
the most common type of computer. The Central Processing Unit (CPU) is
contained in an integrated circuit (IC). Personal computers (PCs) and portable
computers(laptops,notebooks,palmtops and Personal Digital Assistants) are
microcomputers.
