.: Crde - The Year in Review

2006 has been a very memorable year for Crde, with a number of highlights. The month of February saw the groups first festival appearence of the year at the annual Gathering festival in Killarney. Following sessions of music and drink all weekend, the group went into hiberbation (recovery) until the Fleadh by the Feale in Abbeyfeale on the May bank holiday weekend. Needless to say a great weekend was had by all. After a brief respite it was off to Dunmanway a couple of weeks later to play at the Cork Fleadh Ceol, Saturday the 20th of May, an unforgettable day for any Munster rugby fans. Once again the tunes (drinks) flowed until the early hours in celebration of our heroes...

Crede In between gigs in May Crde also recorded a number of demo tracks, with a view to recording an album in 2007.

It gave us great pleasure to perform at the Johnny O'Leary concert in the INEC in Killarney at the start of August, with some of the most recognised musicians in Irish music performing, most notably Liam O Flynn and Sean Keane. It was a really special night for everyone in attendence, and especially for all us "Sliabh Luachra" musicians, as we most definately would not be playing today but for the likes of Johnny O'Leary and his generation keeping trad music alive in the area.

August was a major break through for Crde who were invited to play at the 1st annual World Fleadh in Ballybunion. Despite being tired and somewhat emotional after a gruelling week of music, Crde rocked the town stage with renouned internalional acts Kla, Tada and Liadn. This festival was without doubt the highlight of the music calendar and Portlaoise in '07 is not to be missed for any fan of traditional music.

The final festival of the year was the Patrick O'Keeffe festival in Castleisland on the October bank holiday weekend where Crde were announced as the headline act for the concert (strange but true!!!). Finally our last gig of the year was in November in Portlaoise at the launch of The World Fleadh '07, a festival the promises to be even bigger and better than Ballybunion '06!! (shivers at the thought!!!!)

Crde look forward to the new year and hope 2007 brings as much ceol and more importantly craic as 2006. Already Crde have been confirmed for the Gathering Festival in Killarney in February, The Fleadh by the Feale in Abbeyfeale and the World Bodhran Festival in Miltown in Co. Kerry in June. Crde are also looking at possible tours to Holland and Denmark in the second half of '07.

Crde would also like to take this opportunity to thank West Limerick 102, and Jacqueline O'Connor in particular, for all the airplay and promo over 2006.

Con Curtin Music Festival - This Mid-Summer Festival was established in 2001 to celebrate a very unusual Sliabh Luachra blossom of music , with a unique tempo and rhythm. Con Curtin is a master exponent of this Sliabh Luachra style.

[Brosna] is known as the birthplace of traditional Irish music, and the village of Brosna certainly lived up to its reputation when it hosted the Con Curtin Traditional Festival. - June 21, 2001 The Kerryman.

Con Curtin THE BALLOON IN BROSNA - RTE Radio 1
Broadcast 27th July 2005.

A documentary about the fiddle player and self-proclaimed living legend Con Curtin. Con was born in Brosna, Co Kerry in 1925. Every year the village holds a festival in his honour. Con's life story has a Rabelaisian quality to it. Apprenticed as a blacksmith - a trade with no future he points out - he left for the promise of London at an early age. There he worked as a ganger for Murphy for ten years, tunnelling beneath the streets of the city, before becoming a publican.

His fourteen year tenancy of The Balloon in Chelsea passed into London folklore. The Balloon was renowned as a place that rarely closed for business - pushed by a policeman on one occasion Curtin defined his opening hours as from January until December. He played music on the Topic album, Paddy in the Smoke, recorded in London in the 1960s and regarded by many as the finest live recording of traditional music ever made.

Musically Curtin is defined by Sliabh Luchra and by his time in London. Brosna is - for him - the place that music comes from and his life has been defined by that music and the people he met through it. Con Curtin is one of the last of his kind: a natural storyteller.

Producers: Peter Woods and Liam O'Brien

Interview with Ron Kavana

Ron Kavana recollected an event that typified the autonomus spirit of Sliabh Luachra music.

"I was down at the Brosna Feis a couple of years ago and there was a whole gang of us gathered in Con Curtin's pub Ti Na bhFilledoiri in Brosna there was a great gang of young trad players and trad-influenced players and we all gathered at the bar because there was a session already going on when we got there. The session that was going on was just all slides and polkas. There wasn't a single reel or jig or hornpipe played and most of the tunes weren't familiar to us, I was really amused to see all these faces around me very well known tradmusicians all gobsmacked by the fact that this session could be going on for hours without any of the standard reels or jigs being played. That night epitomised for me what that scene is all about. It was like the rest of the country went one way and the area of North Cork, Kerry and West Limerick went the other."
