Week Two: All About Verbs
What is a Verb?
Verbs are the action words in our sentences. They show what is being done or what just IS.
Main and Auxiliary Verbs
Main verbs simply tell us what the subject does.
Auxiliary verbs have two forms.
- Helping - words such as will and have.
- Simple predicates - these helping verbs can stand on their own.
Verbs and Objects
An object usually comes after the verb, it will complete it's meaning. They can be direct; noun, noun phrases, or pronouns; or indirect; the receiver of the action.
Transitive and Intransitive Verbs
Transitive = Subject + Verb + Object
Intransitive = Action verb without a direct object.
Linking Verb
These serve to link the subject and the action or being.
