Kerry entered the doorway to her outer office.
'I don't want to be disturbed until further notice.' Kerry said to her secretary.
'You have a meeting in 20 minutes, Dr. Weaver.' Kerry's secretary replied while looking past Kerry at her companion.
'This is Dr. Legaspi.' Kerry said realizing she had neglected to introduce Kim.
Standing and extending a hand he said, 'Ah, Dr. Legaspi. I've heard about you. You and Dr. Weaver were...' Noticing Kerry's reaction he quickly pulled his hand back and stopped talking. Finding his voice again he said, 'Um, your meeting Dr. Weaver, not this one, the other one. Well...I...would you like me to...I can always... Dr. Weaver I didn't mean to imply anything about you and Dr. Lega...'
Even though Kerry was mildly amused at the young mans ramblings she decided he had gone far enough. 'Dr. Legaspi and I need to talk. I need you to reschedule the meeting. If it cannot be rescheduled arrange for me to get full notes. Is there anything else on my schedule?'
Amazed at his bosses coolness when most would have fired him on the spot for overstepping the line he looked at the days itinerary. 'The meeting was scheduled to last all day with lunch at 1pm until 2.30 then back to the meeting until 6pm.'
'Oh, that meeting. That's right, all day. I wasn't looking forward to it. Henry's back tonight and I wanted to have everything ready for him. OK, I'm not going to make the meeting. There's no chance the meeting can be rescheduled. What I said before, make it happen, get me all the notes from the meeting. If anyone gripes about me not being there tell them I'm helping a patient. I'm sure by now they have all heard Dr. Legaspi is in the building and that I'm meeting with her. They will come to their own conclusion why I am not there. One thing I know, I'll be home in plenty of time for Henry now.' Kerry said the last sentence with a smile.
Kim stood listening. Last she heard of Kerry she was with a woman, a firefighter. She hadn't spoken to anyone from County in a while so it never occurred to her that Kerry would be with a man. She had been told Kerry was happy with her firefighter. But here she was hearing it for herself, Kerry was in a relationship with a man. Kim's heart sank a little at this news.
'OK, Dr. Weaver. I'll let the other attendees know you won't be there. Can I get either of you something? Coffee or tea perhaps?'
'Dr. Legaspi would you like something.' Kerry asked.
The fact Kerry choose to call her Dr. Legaspi didn't go unnoticed. Kim found her voice, ensuring not to let the fact she was a little hurt at the formality be heard in her voice. 'Coffee would be nice. Thank you.' She smiled at Kerry's secretary.
'And you Dr. Weaver?'
'Coffee will be fine, thanks.' Kerry turned to Kim. 'Shall we go in?'
Kim nodded and walked past Kerry who followed her in.
Kerry walked around her desk. Kim stood waiting. 'Have a seat Kim.' Kerry said indicating to the two chairs in front of her desk. Sitting herself she looked at Kim. Was Kim waiting for her to speak she wondered because she was waiting for Kim to speak.
Between the elevator and Kerry's office the tension had build again. A knock at the door caused both women to break eye contact and look at the door. Kerry knew it was her secretary with the coffee, she shouted for him to enter. Not two seconds in the room he felt the tension, it was unmistakable. Kerry and Kim watched as he place the tray on the desk.
'Is there anything else I can get for either of you?'
Kim shook her head.
'No, but thank you.' Kerry said. Her secretary look one last time at both women and left. How he wished he could stay in the room and hear the forthcoming conversation. He knew he would be inundated with people asking what was going on, wondering if he knew why Dr. Legaspi had returned.
