Happy Endings Only Happen To Other People

PART 9

Several months after Abby first approached Kerry things were better for the younger woman.

'Kerry, hey, whatsup?' Abby asked in high spirits.

Kerry chuckled. 'I'm good. You? You having a good day?'

'It's going well. Lost one patient, saved three.'

'That's great. It's always a good day when you save more than you lose.' Kerry said with a smile. She was overjoyed at how far Abby had come in only a few months. Abby was happier than Kerry had ever seen her. She smiled more, she looked healthier. About three months ago Kerry realized she had feelings for Abby. At first she dismissed them because they had gotten close to each other. Both revealing many personal things about themselves.

As much as Kerry wanted to tell Abby how she felt she didn't think it would be the right thing to do. Every night she reminded herself that Abby was straight. She on the other hand wasn't. She had a handful of reasons, sometimes she chanted them in her head like a mantra.

Abby stopped coming over to Kerry's as much as she did at the beginning. She hadn't stayed over in a couple of months. Kerry missed her company. Henry missed her too. He had gotten quite attached to his mommy's friend.

'You doing anything tonight?' Abby asked Kerry.

Kerry was looking at a file. Her heart started to race, this was how Abby usually let her know she would like to come over. Kerry not showing her excitement continued to look at the file, not reading it anymore said, 'I'll be home alone. Henry's with his grandparents tonight. What about you?' Kerry asked, this is where Abby would say she was doing nothing and ask if she wanted to get a bite to eat together.

'I have a date.' Abby said with a smile.

Kerry said nothing. She stared blankly at the file. Finally she mumbled, 'That's great. I'd better go back to my office. Paperwork, you know how it is.' Kerry headed for the elevators. She thought her heart had stopped beating. Her breathing was heavy, she felt like someone had slapped her.

Racing into her office Kerry slammed the door shut before the tears fell.

Abby stood staring after Kerry. She was long gone but Abby couldn't move. What had she said? The last thing she wanted to do was hurt Kerry. After everything Kerry had for her she didn't want to do anything to upset her friend.

Abby realized her feelings for Kerry very early on in their new, closer friendship. She never let on to Kerry. She didn't want to scare the older woman off. Kerry didn't know Abby had been in a few serious relationships with woman. Since starting at County she'd only been in relationships with men. But she needed Kerry's close friendship. But over the months her feelings had grown. She'd seen a side of Kerry she'd only seen a few times. And a few sides she didn't know existed. She loved watching Kerry with Henry. She could see how much she loved her son and Henry just adored his mom.

Deciding she couldn't keep spending time with Kerry, Abby stopped going to Kerry's every night. It hurt her. She missed her friend. She missed Henry. She wondered if they missed her.

'Penny for them.'

Abby turned. 'Sorry what?'

'Your thoughts. A penny for them, you looked a little lost there.' Elizabeth said.

'Sorry Dr. Corday. I was lost for a long time.' Abby said thinking of Kerry and how she found her.

'And now you're found?'

In barley a whisper she said, 'Yes.'

Elizabeth moved a little closer and said, 'And Kerry's the one who found you?'

Abby's mouth hung open. She didn't know what to say.

'It's OK Abby. I've seen you two together...a lot and just thought you two seemed close.'

'We were. She helped me through a ruff patch. There's nothing more between us than friendship.' Abby's voice betrayed that she wanted more.

Corday gave a knowing look. 'Tell her Abby. If for no other reason it'll save your sanity. You could do a lot worse than Kerry Weaver.'

Abby was shocked.

'I know Kerry and I don't always see eye to eye but I know she's a good person deep down and when you get to know her. I know she's very loyal to her friends.'

'She doesn't feel the same way.' Abby said.

'Are you sure?' Elizabeth asked.

'Of course I'm sure.'

'You don't sound it. Why did Kerry leave just now?'

'She had to go to her office for something.'

'Did you say something to her?'

'I told her I had a date tonight.'

'I see and you don't think she left here as fast as she did because she doesn't want to hear about you getting with someone else?'

Abby thought for a moment. 'No, that can't be it. Can it?' And suddenly it hit Abby. Kerry felt the same way. She thinks Abby's straight so of course she wouldn't hit on her and she was helping Abby get through a troubled time so of course Kerry wouldn't hit on her. 'How did I miss it?'

'Go get your girl Abby.' Elizabeth said but Abby was already heading to the elevators.
