We need to prepare ourselves and
create rather than await the future."

Standard of Living
"People in France have a better standard of living than we do and they use half of the energy that we do."
Do you agree?

The idyllic picture

1.  Ther are no large supermarkets or Wal-marts near to small towns.

2. "You don't need a car in Europe.  You can take the train anywhere."

Behind the idyllic picture

1.  Small stores and boutiques in towns have a near monopoly, allowing them to charge consumers higher prices and offer a less-diverse selection of products.

2.  Try taking the train when you want to.  Try carrying a large load with you.  Try taking a group of four... a fun trip in the US from Fort Lauderdale to Orlando costs roughly 20 gallons of gasoline to drive 400 miles...  Even a 20 cents per mile charge makes it just $80 or about $20 a person.

Take the train and the cost will be higher for a round trip ticket.

Visitors from Europe often mention with glee their plans for a two week vacation...driving from Florida to Niagara and south to New Orleans.  One couple flew into San Francisco, drove to LA, Las Vegas, Denver, and dropped the car off in New Orleans, then flew on to New York...all in 14 days.
