THREE FUTURES in 2020

Click on each one:

Future1:  More Parking Spaces

Future 2:  Smaller vehicles, Better Mass Transit, More efficient handling of the entrance and exit of parking structures.

Future 3: A Change in Attitude
The public could show more respect to parking administrators and enforcers, and the
Parking employers could be friendlier...

Future 1
Key Characteristic
More Parking Spaces

In 2001, the City of Fort Lauderdale managed x,xxx parking spaces in garages and on-street parking locations.

What will the future hold?

Assumption in Future 1
There are locations that currently could hold more parking.

UPSIDE
Placing a meter on the side of a road is an inexpensive method of expanding the inventory of parking spaces.

Restricting flow of traffic (e.g. on Las Olas) can make the area safer for pedestrians.

DOWNSIDE
On Street Parking slows down traffic movement.by removing a lane of traffic.

Elements of this future
1.  On street parking on Las Olas Blvd is currently limited to weekends and from 6:30 p.m. weekdays.
UNDER THIS SCENARIO:  Future parking could be permitted from 7 am to 2 am.

2.  In downtown Fort Lauderdale, there are several streets that don't have parking on the street.

3.  Some parking spaces are not metered.
Example:  SE 1 Street, between Federal and

LIMITATIONS
1.  Certain major avenues and boulevards are not allowed to have on-street parking because emergency vehicles are required to have unrestricted access to the major ingress and egress roads.  (CHECK THIS with FIRE/TRAFFIC)   Examples:  Broward Blvd, Andrews Avenue.
