A brief overview...

The Horse Collector actually commissioned Candice Liddy to sculpt the moulds in 1995. In 1996, the (stablemate-sized) masters were sent to a company called Creata in China, and Creata scaled down the masters and created tools, from which the models were made.

Three series were produced, one in 1996, 1997 and 1998. New moulds were introduced in 1997 and 1998. About halfway through 1998, The Horse Collector and Creata had a disagreement and the Winners Choice micros (the name they were sold under) were discontinued. The Series 3 sets were only on sale for a very short period.

There were two 'releases', if you like, within each series. 'Mass market' releases were available in large stores such as Toys 'R' Us, Walmart, etc. 'Specialty market' releases were only available in smaller stores, such as saddleries and individual toy stores. The same sets were available to each market, but the colours of the horses were typically different. (Appaloosa and pinto patterns remained the same. Markings generally follow the same pattern, but IIRC they are hand painted so don't always match.) The packaging may have also been slightly different. Specialty market horses are generally worth more in today's market, but no price guide currently exists.

Breyer bought the rights and moulds to all of the Creata micros and accessories in 2004-ish, and 2005 we saw the release of the Mares, Stallions and Foals sets. The Breyers are obviously different - they have more shading, generally have worse seams and are printed with 'Breyer' on the belly.

Original Creatas are typically one flat body colour (with or without points), and are stamped 'Creata' on the belly.

You may occasionly see the resin masters for sale - they are OOAK and are Stablemate scale (1/32).
