A brief history for the curious
Yes, they are real. I paint them myself. I do have a license but all artwork is self taught. I can do both hands with no problem,
which amazes lots of people.
The thing that amazes me is that I can paint almost anything on a nail
but I cannot draw on paper to save my life.
I have acrylic on them but the acrylic doesn't help them grow,
it keeps my nails from curving too wildly and it enables me
to keep my polish on until I am ready to take it off.
I had long nails before it was popular and before the age of acrylics.
At their longest, my nails are approximately 1 1/2 to 2 inches long. Any longer and they start to hinder my everyday life.
I cut them 2 to 3 times a year but I try to space it out as far
as I can because the shorter my nails are the faster they grow.
My nails grow at a very fast rate. If I cut them all off today they would be back to their max length in around a year.
It is hard to find a good fingernail site with nice hand-painted designs because there are many who veiw long nails as a fetish.
