Malnutrition, disease, unemployment and lack of eductation are everyday challenges faced by the Peruvians in the shantytowns. Under the thatched roof of the small hillside school, we were introduced to a class of about 30 students ranging in ages between 3 to 15. The children were full of smiles and chuckles- as one would expect to find in any school.
The class welcomed us with two of their favorite songs that they sung under the direction of their teacher. Her name is Modesta Rojas, a woman small in stature but mighty in spirit. She cares for over 150 children in this small neighborhood- by herself. When she is not teaching, she is washing clothes from house to house to raise money for the children for food, clothing and school supplies. Her commitment was staggering.
The children in the class held Modesta in the highest respect. They listened attentively and followed her every direction. Beyond their shining faces,we found a knowledge of sorrow and hardship in their eyes that no child should ever have to know. Despite all the basics that these children do not have, they do have something special that millions of children in their city don't- someone who is there day after day to provide love, care and support. It was encouraging for us to see the impact that one person can have on so many lives. So often I've asked myself, "Can I really make a difference? What I'm doing through Chuckroast Coffee - does it really matter?" Her demonstration of love and perserverence is a reminder to me that no work is too small. Sharing the love of Christ on any level is never insignificant. Purchasing our high quality coffee and tee shirts to help support this work. |
