Chapter 2:  Broadway
In the spring of 1947, he shifted to musical theater in a revival of Louisiana Purchase with the Los Angeles Civic Light Opera with fellow cast member Mitzi Gaynor, then known as Mitzi Gerber.  This led to dancing again for Robbins in the 1948 Broadway production of Look Ma, Im Dancin! and 1949s Small Wonder. He was cast in larger roles in Irving Berlins Miss Liberty in 1949 and Berlins Ethel Merman vehicle, Call Me Madam in 1950-51.  Tommy learned that he a had a strong singing voice, an important skill as a Broadway performer, and key for future film and stage roles.

Concurrent with the run of Call Me Madam, Tommy worked as a choreographer and performer for Faye Emersons live television show,
Its A Wonderful Town, which showcased a different American city each week.  He danced a number dedicated to Ms. Emersons city of choice, and choreographed the entire show.  The fact that Tommy had time enough to work the television show and still arrive at the theater to perform his second act number demonstrated his dedication to his work.

Future broadcast work would include singing and dance segments on the
Bell Telephone Hour in the early 1960s.  These included his poignant, operatic "Sailor's Lament" to the sweetheart he must leave behind when he departs on a voyage and a salute to spring in March 1961 in which Tommy and a small cast of dancers show their exuberance with the arrival of the new season.  Ann Barzell states in Dance Magazine that Tommy Rall was turning and jumping better than ever and, more important, interpreting spring in wonderful terms.  Years later, he was back on television in a 1984 episode of Fame entitled "The Return of Doctor Scorpio.
