PART 13 (PG - Broken)

“They know we’re going to go, so let’s just go, we can call them on your cell phone.”

“I don’t think this is a smart idea for us to go somewhere alone. Things happen when do recon, that’s how the last time happened, remember?”

“Yes, I do remember, it’s what gets me through the lonely nights.” They were words he longed to hear from her, he knew she wasn’t talking about Thanksgiving, but it sounded nice. “Are you afraid something might happen? Like we’ll accidentally get naked and you’ll accidentally fall in?”

He chuckled; she had a way of pointing out the obvious. “Well, put it that way, and yes.”

“Are you afraid I might not be able to control myself and I’ll just do this...” she walked up to him and pressed her lips to his. “Or this...” she opened her mouth and licked his lips. “Cause that won’t happen. I learned my lesson, a thousand times over.” She couldn’t pull herself away from him. She thought she could, but she couldn’t and he was helpless against her tiny body, full of heat.

Their lips met in furry and passion, rage for what they couldn’t have and desperately wanted. They kissed deeply, hands wrapped around, touching and feeling, groping.

“BUFFY?!” She pulled away, but it was too late. “BUFFY? What are you doing?”

            “Riley... we were just...”

            “Just making out?”

“Riley, it’s not what you think.”

“I think there’s a lot you’re not telling me. First off, I know he’s more than a friend. Just be honest Buffy and we can move on.”

“No, I don’t think we can Riley.” She looked at him and she saw him, he was hurting. She felt bad but she couldn’t kid herself anymore. She wanted Angel and until she either figured out how to have him or found someone she liked more, she couldn’t be with the runner up. It wasn’t fair to him and it wasn’t fair the memory of her and Angel. “Riley, I’m sorry.”

“Are you breaking up with me?”

“Riley, it’s not fair for you to be with someone who can’t love you for exactly who you are. You are so sweet and kind, and you’re wonderful and you’ve been nothing but good and patient with me, but...”

“But what? Is this another trick, like the engagement to that guy Spike?” Angel spun around and she looked at him and smiled.

“No Riley, this isn’t a trick, I’m sorry, but you deserve someone who can love you for you, not who she wishes you were. I hope one day we can be friends, when you see this is for your own good.”

“I see.” He backed away and pulled his hand backed and slapped her on the face.

WHO THE HELL DOES HE THINK HE IS?! Angel immediately vamped and ran to Buffy. Riley looked up at him, as he helped Buffy up. She hadn’t been expecting that and it threw her off her game.

“HE’S A VAMPIRE?! THAT’S RICH BUFFY!” Buffy jumped up.

“I don’t care how much you’re hurting Riley, it gives you no right to hit me!”

“No, it doesn’t.” Angel said as he threw punch after punch at Riley. Riley tried to fight back but he couldn’t and he fell to the ground.

“ANGEL! NO!” She screamed. “DON’T! STOP!” She grabbed his fist before he could hit him again. He looked down and he shook off his face and got up. He looked at her and ran.

“Riley, are you okay?” She helped him up.

“Your boyfriend packs quite a punch.”

            “He’s my ex-boyfriend, it’s complicated.”

“Complicated in that he’s a vampire?”

“Among other things, you had no right to hit me.”

“I know, I’m sorry, I just, I love you Buffy, and I’ll fight him for you.”

“Riley, even if you won, I won’t be with you, and you wouldn’t win.” His eyes fell to the ground.

            “I love you.”

“I know, I’m sorry, it wasn’t fair of me to lead you on like I did. I was stupid and foolish to think I could replace him, but I can’t and although I can’t have him, I can’t be with you, you’re not him. Will you be okay?”

“Yeah, just make sure he doesn’t run into me again, he’ll end up in the lab.” He stood up and took off, he was breaking inside. She did feel bad, but there was nothing she could do and Angel probably thought she was mad at him. Things were so damn complicated with him. She ran in the direction he did, towards Giles’.

PART 14 (PG - Leaving)

He wished he could just leave, but they need his help. He sat on the couch next to Willow. He watched her taking quick glances at Spike every few seconds. He remembered the glances he and Buffy used to share, filled with desire and love. The door opened and he looked up.

“I’m back. Spike, if you see Riley, I suggest you run the other way.”

            “What?”

“He’ll no longer protect you from the commandos, Angel, I suggest you take the warning under suggestion too.”

            “What in bloody hell happened?”

            “We broke up. He’s angry.”

“Why in bloody hell did you do that?”

“Because, I’m not going out with him so you can be assured some safety, you want safety, leave.” She approached Angel, “We need to talk.”

            “No we don’t.”

“Fine, whatever, we need to get to those caves and find out what the hell is going on.”

“Fine, but I think you might be forgetting about the soon to be risen sun, I don’t feel like burning to a crisp before noon.”

“We’ll take your car and a jacket, once we’re in the caves, you’ll be fine, I’ll drive. We don’t have time to waste, let’s go.” He stood up.

            “Buffy?”

            “Yeah Giles?”

“Perhaps some weapons would be a good idea.”

“Right, I’ll get them.” She went and grabbed a cross bow and a stake. She also grabbed an axe and a couple knives she’d been practicing with. “Ready.”

            “Me too.”

“Good.” They walked out and she shot a glance back. “Don’t worry, we’ll be back by nightfall I’m sure, and we’ve got the cell phone, we do have it yes?”
            “Yes.”

            “Bye ya’ll.”

PART 15 (R - On the Way)

“Are you going to saying anything?”

“What do you want to say Buffy?”

“Anything, your stoicism is growing old and it’s not like you have a tape player.”

“Turn the radio on if you like.”

“I’d rather talk, why’d you run?”

            “Why not?”

“God can’t you answer one stupid question? Why do always have to be so patronizing?”

            “I almost killed him.”

“No you didn’t, he’s fine, just angry.”

“When he hit you I got so mad, I wanted to kill him.”

“But you didn’t you just roughed him up a little.”

“I wanted to do more. I... I enjoyed it.”

“So, I’d enjoy kicking Dru’s butt, you get jealous over someone who knows your lover almost as well as you do, it happens. It’s nothing to be ashamed of, you were protecting me.”

“I almost killed him, I wanted to, I wanted to rip his lungs out and make him eat them.”

“That’s a nice picture to have.”

“It’s what I would have done, if you hadn’t stopped me.”

“Angel, you’re mad at him, you’re jealous...”

            “I’m not jealous.”

“Right... you didn’t squirm and cringe anytime he touched me or said my name.”

“Oh, so maybe I am jealous.”

“It’s okay. I just wish you hadn’t vamped out, he knows, he’ll be even more angry. He’ll probably go looking for you.”

“I know... but when I’m angry, I do that... it’s just a reaction.”

“Gee, good thing you can’t have kids, I mean your kid comes home with a tattoo and you go ballistic... course your kid would probably be vampy too, huh?”

“I don’t know, it’s not an issue, it doesn’t matter. I don’t think about it. I try not to think about things I can’t have. It hurts too much.”

“I know the feeling. We have to stop touching, it’s the whole problem. We have to stop this new crisis, you can go back to LA and we yearn for each other in private.”

“Sounds like a good plan.” He sat quietly, watching the trees fly by through the tinted windows. “So when did you get your license?”

“Riley taught me how to drive, I got it about a month ago.”

            “That was nice of him.”

“I thought so, although I am more of a walky person. It’s nice to have a choice.”

            “Yeah.”

Silence. She wanted to confess all she was thinking about. She wanted to tell him how badly she wanted him to touch her, anywhere, it didn’t matter. She longed to feel his fingers working their magic on her, running circles on her skin. She yearned for his tongue to touch the very places Riley never dared to go. She wanted to pull the car over and jump in the back seat with him, but the more she thought about it, the more she realized that she wouldn’t be able to wait to climb into the back. For that matter, she wished he would just bend over and work his magic right there.

“BUFFY!” She flashed back to the road.

“Oops.”

“We almost went over the edge of the road, maybe I should drive.”

“No, I just thought about something else for a minute, I’ll be fine, just keep me talking, when you’re quiet, I think about other things and I get spacey.”

“Fine, how are your classes going?” Good, conversation. They talked about everything, demons, people at school, her roommate, his clients, those little things you miss telling that someone special. She missed hearing about what he was reading during the day, and what he thought about. She fell in love with him all over again.

They got to the caves in two hours. She couldn’t believe there was even a road there, but it was a big make-out point so she guessed from the beer cans strewn about. She had only ever seen snow one other time, when it had come in senior year. But they were pretty high up in altitude. She looked down over the valley and saw it, a huge mouth, it was smiling. She looked up, above the cave there were steep cliffs covered in snow, she shivered a little and he took off his coat and handed it to her.

“Angel, you need this to get into the caves.”

“Right, well take it once we’re inside. Let’s go.” And they made a break for it.

She burst through the door. “WHERE IS HE?”

“Cordy! How ya been?”

“Xander, fine, where’s Angel?”

“Him and Buffy went to do recon to some caves somewhere, why?”

“OH NO!”

PART 16 (R - Going In)

            “Ready?”

“Buffy, I’m practically on fire here, just go in.”

“Right, sorry.” They entered the cave and she lit the lantern they had brought. “Wow, where do we start? Do you smell anything?”

            “Yeah, you.”

            “Well, duh! Anything else?”

“No, let’s just not get lost.”

“As long as we don’t get separated, we’ll be fine, plus we can leave these little pieces of cloth I brought every now and then, so we can find our way back.”

“I don’t mean to crude here, but maybe we should leave something else here, so we can be sure of finding our way back, if someone picks the cloth up, if a demon sees it, or something...”

“Well, I don’t know what would stay put. Any ideas on what else could we leave?”

            “Blood.”

“Sorry, fresh out, I didn’t bring my spray bottle full of blood with me today.” She watched as he took the knife from his pocket. “Angel...”

“I’ll be able to smell my own blood...”

            “No, use mine...”

            “Buffy, mine is fine.”

“You’ll be able to smell mine more, won’t you?” He looked away. “You will, give me the knife. Too bad we don’t have a cup.”

            “A cup?” He asked.

“So I don’t have to keep pricking myself every time we want to leave some.”

“Right, just a prick on the finger will work, a little drop of blood.”

“We should leave more here, right?”

“I suppose.” He watched as she cut her finger and the blood dripped down, ten drops that made a stain on the rock. “That’s fine.” He wanted it, craved it. He watched as she put her finger in her mouth. “That never stops the bleeding Buffy, why do people do that?”

“What else are you going to do, stain your clothes?”

“Put pressure on it.” She took her finger out of her mouth and he looked down at it. He wanted it so badly he could taste it.  She knew that, to him this was foreplay and she raised her finger to his mouth.

            “Take some.”

            “No.”

“Well, if it doesn’t heal right away, I won’t to keep cutting myself.”

            “So suck on it yourself.”

“That was a little harsh.” She took a piece of cloth out and wrapped it around her finger. “No need to be mean, I was just fooling around.”

“Buffy, if I were you I wouldn’t taunt a vampire with blood, you’re libel to get hurt.”

“Not from you.” He let the comment slide. “Fine, let’s go.” They walked further into the cave and the huge entrance got smaller and smaller. They continued to walk the tunnels for what seemed like forever. They found nothing, except a small picture on a wall and three candles underneath.

“What do you think it means?”

“I don’t know, wish we had a pen to copy the picture.” He said.

“Got paper?” He searched his pockets and he found a folded up piece and handed it to her.

“Great.” She pricked herself and dabbed the blood on the paper and drew the picture. “Who needs a pen? Got blood?”

“Not exactly what I was hoping for.”

“But it works.” Suddenly they heard a rumbling and it was like an earthquake. She grabbed Angel and held on to keep her balance. It stopped and she could no longer see the little entrance. “Angel?”

            “Yeah?”

            “What the hell was that?”

“I don’t know, but we should go back.”

“Good idea. Lead the way.” They walked quickly back through the tunnels; they had been in all of them now. The entrance was gone when they got back. “It’s here, right, my blood?”

“Yes, it’s right here.” He felt the entrance wall, it was white. “I think we’re snowed in.”

            “What?”

“I think it was an avalanche of some kind.”

“Great, what do we do now?”

            “Try to dig out.”

“Shouldn’t we explore more, the sun will melt it pretty soon.” She was quiet for a minute then said, “Oops, the car is probably gone.”

            “Let’s hope for the best.”

“Right. I’m hungry, we should have brought some crackers.”

“There’s a candy bar in my jacket pocket.”

“Ooo, snickers! Yummy!” She opened it and wolfed it down. “Of course now I’ll still waste away, but it’ll take a couple more hours. Yea!” She sunk down to the floor. She shivered.

            “You’re cold.”

“Duh... you’re not exactly the best person to be stuck with in a hypothermic situation, not like we can rely on body heat to save me from impending doom.”

“You’re not going to freeze. I will walk around here naked while you wear my clothes if that’s what we have to do.”

“Thanks you don’t have to but nice image though.” She smiled as he sat down opposite to her. “So... ooo, get the cell phone, call them and in like three hours, we’re out!”

“Good idea, give me the phone.” He hopped up and walked over to her and she handed him the phone. Their fingers brushed and she withdrew. He turned it on and called the number. “DAMMIT! Out of service.”

“Great! Of course... figures... well now what?”

“Come on between the two of us we should be able to dig us out of here, we’re not wimps.”

“Great, I’m up for it.” They dug and scratched at the icy surface for an hour but to no avail, the knife couldn’t even cut through the ice. She was cold, she was shivering.

“We have to get you some heat.” He said. “Hey, hit me.” She looked at him confused. “We’ll fight and you’ll get warmer, you know a work out.”

“Yeah, and then I’ll work up an appetite and be hungrier than I am now.”

“Sorry, wasn’t planning for this. I could find a rat for you.”

“Gee, no thanks, I’ll pass. I’d have to be really hungry for that.”

“Well, I offered.” He sat down opposite her again.
