=====================================================================
She walked up the
stairs after calling Giles. Her back didn’t hurt as much and she wanted nothing
more than to take a hot bath and relax before sleeping. Her room was dark when
she got there and she didn’t have the energy to move so she collapsed on the
bed and closed her eyes. She wondered where Spike was. Her question was
answered when the light went on and she saw him with a towel wrapped around his
waist. He was drying his hair off and left that towel around his neck. He stood
with his hand on his hips looking at her.
“Hey.” He said.
“Hey.” She wanted to
get up, but she didn’t want to move.
“Are you okay?” He
asked, not moving.
“I’m fine, it doesn’t
hurt anymore.”
“No, I meant, did I
scare you?”
“No. I don’t scare
too easily.”
“I’m learning that
about you Slayer.”
“I wanna take a
bath.”
“So take one.”
“I don’t wanna move,
I just wanna lay here forever.”
“So I’ll go draw you
a bath and I’ll carry you in.”
“Would you take my
clothes off too?” She asked, cocking her eyebrow.
He smiled that
incredible smile he had, “I think I can arrange that.” He sat on the bed next
to her and she rubbed his back. “So your back is okay?”
“Yes, it’s fine,
doesn’t hurt anymore, I think it’s already healed.”
“Good.”
“Spike, what
happened?”
“You can’t do what
you did and ask me what happened.” He stood up, obviously upset.
“What did I do? I was
bleeding, you like blood... what’s wrong with that?”
“You do that for
Angel?”
“No.”
“Then why am I any
different?”
“I was never bleeding
in front of Angel and why is it an issue? What does it matter?”
“It just does. Keep
your blood away from me, and we’ll be fine.”
“Spike...”
“NO! I mean it.”
“What’s this really
about?” He got up and started getting dressed. He looked back at her and walked
out her bedroom door. “Where are you going?” She got up and followed him.
“SPIKE!”
“I’m going back to
Giles’, this isn’t going to work out Slayer, you stay away from me and I’ll do
the same.” He left and she didn’t have the energy to follow him. She went back
upstairs and laid down and fell asleep crying.
------------------------------
“Spike, what are you
doing here at this hour?”
“Please invite me
in.”
“Why? I thought Buffy
took you to her mom’s.”
“Well, her mum came
home and didn’t want me and the watcher still has a friend.”
“Xander? Who is it?”
Anya reached the door, in her pajamas, or rather a shirt of the boy’s. “Oh,
it’s Spike the vampire. Whadda you want? We were about to have...”
“ANYA! Must you? Look
Spike, love to help but can’t, go to Buffy’s dorm room or something.”
“Come on, please,
it’s gonna be day soon.”
“Oh, darn, you’ll be
dust.”
“Buffy still needs my
help, please?”
“Come in Spike.” Anya
said.
“ANYA!”
“Well, he needs help,
and I was a demon stripped of everything I’d known too, and I know how he
feels, we can sex tomorrow. You will be gone by tomorrow, right?”
“Yeah, I’ll find my
own place soon.”
“Fine, come in.”
Xander said reluctantly.
“Alright then. Who’s
up for some telly?”
“Spike, just cause
you’re invited, doesn’t mean you’re welcome. Just lay down, sleep or whatever
vampires do at night and shut up.” Xander flicked the light off and him and
Anya laid down on the pull out couch.
Could his unlife get
any worse? Since he’d left her house, he’d walked around. He found a couple
vampire nests, feeding, having a gay ole time of it. It was strange, he saw it,
and wanted it, but in some ways he didn’t. His unlife had been empty. Dru
filled only so much, but being with the Slayer? Dru had been fun, but Buffy was
as close to heaven as he would get. He forgot how wonderful it was to have sex
with a human. He hadn’t have sex with a mortal since Angelus left him and Dru.
The whole feeling of sex with mortals was so much more than with vampires, they
were warm, hot even. He closed his eyes and thought of the sound of her heart
beating faster as her climax set in, the sound of her breathing, gasping for
air. Sex with Buffy had been unbelievable, she was the Slayer, she matched his
strength, practically overcame his force with her own. She was strong, she knew
how to use her muscles, her legs, her whole body and he loved her. He genuinely
did, making love to her was so much better than anything he’d felt before.
Unfortunately it
couldn’t be, the bloody wanker had been right, vampires and slayers didn’t mix
for good couples. She didn’t understand, she couldn’t. She had posed a good
question, ‘what was it really about?’ He didn’t know, maybe cause he lived for
twenty-four years and never found love and the chance of it was robbed from
him. Maybe it was jealousy over her connection to Angel. While they had made
love, he noticed she had a scar, he must have bitten her, marked her as his.
THAT’S IT! Spike
couldn’t make her his mate. It wasn’t the blood that bothered him, he hadn’t
wanted her blood, he’d wanted the commitment, and he couldn’t get that. He
couldn’t bite her and make her his mate; she already belonged to Angel. He
couldn’t challenge Angel for her, he couldn’t fight, and Angel certainly
wouldn’t give up claim to Buffy. And that was assuming he could even bite to
begin with, which he couldn’t. It was better off that she stay away from him.
He’d leave. It was best to sever the ties between them. It was best.
************
She squeezed her
muscles around him and he growled at her, vampire visage showing itself,
forcing itself to light. Her mouth was on his chest and she was riding him,
hard, thrusting down on him, pushing him deeper inside. Her nails ran down his
chest and he could smell his own blood. He needed hers. He rolled her over,
continuing the motion and reached down to pinch her swollen clit and as she
came, he bit down into her neck over the previously existing scar.
************
He woke with a start,
uncontrollable shaking. He looked around, it must be an earthquake, Xander and
Anya were nowhere to be found. He relaxed into the chair after it stopped. He
was hungry, he needed blood. “Spike?” He heard footsteps coming down.
“Yeah?”
“Good afternoon. I’ve
got to go to work. The quake broke some pipes loose, you’ll have to tighten
them up.”
“Do I look like a
plumber to you?” He said after getting up.
“No you look like a
big mooch who doesn’t wanna lift a finger around here. You didn’t help at
Giles’ but at Xander’s you’re expected to chip in. I have to get to work.”
“Yeah, delivering
melted cheese on bread, doing you part to keep America constipated.”
“Mock not! Remember
who pays for the plasma pal. You earn your keep or you don’t get kept.” He took
the tool and started to swing and the all too familiar searing pain shot
through his head. “When you’re done fixing that leak try cleaning up this mess
and doin’ a little laundry around here wouldn’t kill ya, unfortunately. I called
Giles and Buffy’s on her way over to talk to you with some blood, although I
don’t know why.” Cause I shagged her. “Spike? Are you with me on this?” His
eyes darted back to the boy. “Good, and if you can, clean up a bit while I’m
gone, I’ll be back after dusk, Anya might come by later, if she does, be nice.”
He changed his shirt and left. Great! Buffy’s coming over! What could be wor...
he looked up the stairs and there she was, standing at the top of the stairs
looking like a queen. She was in a knee length red dress, with a white sweater
tied around her waist.
“Hi, I was at Giles’
when Xander called about you, I was worried.”
“Don’t be, I’m fine.”
She came down the stairs and he did his best ignoring her by turning around,
not facing her. “Something happen?”
“What?”
“You were at Giles’?”
“Oh, not really, just
checking in, possible end of the world, the usual.” She put the bags of blood
on the chair, “He’s trying to figure out where the commando base is, he thinks
it maybe somewhere near campus, but he doesn’t know. He’s been looking into
some prophecies that may be unfolding soon though, so I might have some big bad
to fight soon, can’t say as I’m happy about that, but I never got the choice. I
was chosen to stand against the demons and vampires, though it never mentioned
falling in love with one, let alone falling in love with a second, but Giles
always said I was a unique slayer.”
“Slayer, this isn’t a
good idea, it’s over, let’s just move on. It was a good time, but that’s all it
was.”
“No it wasn’t.” She
grabbed him and made him look into her eyes. “You didn’t just fuck me, you made
love to me, and that wasn’t my imagination, I can see it in your eyes. Why
fight about it? Why deny it?” He needed her to know it wouldn’t work.
“Listen, Slayer, I
don’t know what you’re talking about, it was a good shag, I hadn’t had one in a
while. Thanks for that, but any business I have with you is long over.” He saw
her choke the tears back. “I love Dru, and Dru alone.” He pulled his arm away
from her and turned away, he couldn’t watch her.
“NO! You’re lying.
Why are you doing this? I love you. For some strange reason I do and...”
“Slayer, I’m a demon.
I am William the Bloody and I don’t do nice with Slayers unless I want
something. I got what I wanted, now leave it at that. I’m bad and I’m evil and
I USED YOU!” He tried to hit her but the searing pain ripped through his head
and he fell backwards. His fall was aided by a blow to the head.
“FINE! I HATE YOU
TOO!” She ran out the door. Good, it was for the best. He sat and drank. If
only there was a way to challenge Angel, but it couldn’t be done. His Sire was
strong and it was a fight he’d surely lose even if he could fight.
She ran to school as
fast as she could, she had to get away. She got to the dorm and lay on her bed
and cried until the door opened. “BUFFY! What’s wrong?”
“Oh Willow, why do I
do this to myself?” Willow sat next to her and they hugged.
“Tell me what
happened.”
“I don’t know. He
took off from the dorm room and I went to Mom’s and he was there and we had an
argument I guess and he left. Then I went to Xander’s this morning to see him
and he used me Willow, he used me for sex, that’s it. I’m so stupid.”
“NO! Buffy, listen to
me, look at me.” Buffy looked into her friend’s eyes. “Buffy, the love spell, I
saw love in your eyes, and in his. But what I saw here last night? It was so
much more than love. He’s lying for some reason, talk to him, it’s probably
just a miscommunication or something Buffy.”
“I don’t know Willow.
I can’t do doomed again, I can’t. I can’t have another Angel... I can’t.”
“I know Buffy, I
know. How’d it go with Riley this morning?”
“Oh, I told him, I
had to, there was no way around it, but I told him we needed time. I mean, I
like him, but...”
“But he’s no Spike.”
“Yeah. I am in need
of mental help Wills, I’m not right.”
“Love isn’t logical
Buffy, you told me that. Carpe diem. If you want him, take him! Make him see.”
“No, it’s impossible
anyway, he’s right, we can’t be together, for whatever reason, we can’t be.
I’ve gotta stop hanging out with vampires, there’s no good there. Socializing
with vampires is not something I should do, anymore. I just need a nice normal
guy and a night of fun.”
“Speaking of fun, are
we still meeting at the party?”
“Yeah, sounds good.”
“Oh no! Spike this
place looks worse than when I left. You didn’t even fix the drip.”
“Don’t turn around.”
He said.
“Spike, what is it?
What happened?” Xander said turning around.
“Don’t look at me.”
The boy laughed. “I shrunk them, bleeding shirt, trousers... I hate this
place.”
“You know, I’m not
any happier about you wearing my stuff than you are.”
“Go out and get me
some good stuff. And I want more blood.”
“NO! You’re not a
guest.”
“You want me tear
this place apart you bloody poof?”
“That’s it! I am WAY
past through with you. I hate to break it to you, oh impotent one, but you’re
not the big bad any more. You’re not even the kinda naughty. You’re nothing but
a waste of space, MY SPACE. And as much as I always got a big laugh watchin’
Buffy kick your shiny white bum and as much as I know I can give you a little
bum kicking myself right now, I’m here to tell you something. You’re not even
worth it. I’m outta here.”
As much as he didn’t
want to admit it, the boy was right. He couldn’t go through the rest of his
unlife under Angel’s shadow, with Angel’s girls. He couldn’t have Dru, he
couldn’t have Buffy... Buffy! The name, the face, the girl, when did he go and
get all poofy with her? He didn’t have a soul, he was pathetic. No, he was
worse than pathetic, he was beyond pathetic.
------------------------------
“Okay, you guys go
find the Word of Valios and be careful, I don’t want anyone getting hurt.”
“Buffy, are you sure
you’re up for a fight?”
“I’m fine Willow, I
take my men problems out on demons remember? I’m an expert on misplaced anger.
I’ll meet you back here later.”
“Bye.” Buffy left.
“What men problems
Will?” Xander asked as they began walking toward his house.
“Oh, nothing you’d
understand Xander.”
“NO! What men? What
man? Buffy has a man? Who?”
“She lacks a guy, it
bothers her. Let’s go.” They walked together, Xander pumping Willow for
information that she wouldn’t give.
“Goodbye Dru, see you
in Hell.” He was ready, Hell couldn’t be worse than this.
“What are you doing?”
He heard the voice as he was falling.
“Bloody hell, can’t a
person knock?” He got up.
“What are you doing?”
The witch asked.
“You were trying to
stake yourself.” Xander said grabbing the stake.
“Fag off! It’s no
concern of yours.”
“Is too, for one
thing that’s my shirt you’re about to dust and for another, we’ve shared a lot
here, you should’ve trusted me to do it for you.”
“Xander!”
“What? He wants to
die, I wanna help!”
“It’s ooky, we know
him, we can’t just let him poof himself.”
“Oh but you can, you
know I’d drain you drier than the Sahara if I had half a chance. And besides,
I’m beyond pathetic. Stuck in this basement washin’ skivvies for a blighter, I
wouldn’t have bothered to bite a few months ago.”
“Hey!”
“I can’t fight, I
can’t bite. I mean am I even remotely scary anymore? Tell me the truth.”
“Well, the shirt, is
kinda not very threatening and the short pants. But you know it could also be
cause I know you can’t bite, which I guess isn’t what you need to hear right
now.”
“Stop. Just clear out
okay?”
“Fine, but you break
anything else while I’m gone, you’re sleeping in the garage buster.”
“We can’t leave him
like this, we’ll have to take him with us to the museum.”
“Oh you go on, I
won’t do anything, I feel better now, promise.”
“Think of the happy,
if we don’t find what we’re lookin’ for, we’re facing an apocalypse.”
“Really? You’re not
just sayin’ that?” They got to the library and Willow pulled him aside.
“Spike, what is this
really about?”
“None of your business
Red.”
“Come on, tell me,
why were you so mean to Buffy?”
“Buffy doesn’t
matter. She means nothing.”
“If she means
nothing, why’d you call her Buffy?” The witch had a point.
“Just leave it
alone.”
“NO! Spike, I got
back to the dorm and she was in tears, I haven’t seen her that bad since Angel
broke up with her.”
“DON’T” he went to
slam her into the shelf but backed away in pain, “OW! DON’T bring ANGEL into
this.”
“So this IS about
Angel then, right?” He tried to walk away but she grabbed his arm.
“It is not nor has it
ever been about my bleedin’ Sire, just let it be.”
“NO Spike, I won’t.
Buffy is hurting and it’s the best friend’s job to find out why and she doesn’t
know, so you tell me. I may be young and I may have only been in love once, but
I know love and you love her and she loves you. I don’t know why, but she does.
And I want to help, now tell me.”
“JUST LEAVE ME
ALONE!” He walked away and sat while the two did the research.
“Will, we might as
well leave, we told Buffy we’d meet her at Giles’ we should go, there’s nothing
here.”
“I know, you’re
right, maybe Giles had more luck. Spike! Let’s go.” They walked out of the
museum. He wanted to tell Willow, but he couldn’t. “Great! No Word of Valios.”
“Not even a syllable
of Valios.” Xander said.
“Which means I’m one
step closer to melting in a sea of molten hellfire yeah?”
“Spike! You shouldn’t
talk like that. Okay, so you can’t kill anymore, but there are other fun things
you can do, you’ll adjust.” He turned around the face the witch.
“Adjust? Then what?
End up like the two of you? No thank you.”
“Here it comes, we
can’t just leave him here to stake himself, it’s not right.” Spike wanted
nothing more than to throttle the kid’s throat, but he couldn’t for a number of
reasons. The obvious one being the chip, but if he killed Xander, Buffy would
be mad.
“I should think you
two would be glad to meet the end of days, I mean neither of you is making much
of a go at it. You? Kids your age are going off to university you’ve made it as
far as the basement. And Red here, you couldn’t even dog boy happy. I mean, you
can take the loser out of high school...”
“I see what you’re
doing, you trying to get us to dust you.”
“Am not, just don’t
want pity from geeks more useless than I am.”
“We’re not useless,
we help people, we fight the forces of evil.”
“BUFFY fights the
forces of evil. You’re her groupies. She’d do just as well without you. Better
I’d wager since she wouldn’t have to go about saving your hides all the time.”
“That is SO not true.
We’re part of a team, she needs us.”
“OR you’re still the
same tenth grade losers you’ve always been and she’s too much of a softy to cut
you loose.” He walked away, god that felt good.
“GILES!”
“Buffy, what?”
“OH MY GOD ARE YOU
OKAY?”
“Yes, I’m fine.”
“Hey Giles! We’re
back. Buffy, anything? GILES!”
“I’m fine, I was
wrong, the Word of Valios isn’t a book, it’s a talisman, I had it here the
whole time, bought it a sorcerers estate sale. I thought it was a knock off.”
“Oh. Well, they’ve
got the blood, the bones, the talisman... I wish we knew where.” She said, cor,
she was so hot, even worried. Just watching her be all maternal and
slayer-like, it was too much. “And what the hell are you doing here?”
“We took him with us
to the library Buffy.”
“We do know where,
the Hellmouth, they’re going to open the Hellmouth.” Giles said.
“Well, looks like
we’re going back to high school.”
“Oh the memories!”
Xander exclaimed fifteen minutes later as they stood outside the building.
“Really. Let’s see...
what memories do we have? Possessions, ghosties, witches, ascensions... not to
mention vampires, demons and hellhounds... need I go on?” Buffy said
sarcastically.
“At least we got to
blow up our school, no one else got to do that in history.”
“Right, and I did
have to do something worse than burn the gym.” She said. “Are we ready to get
this over with? The sooner we get out of this place, the better we’ll all be.
I’d rather not be in there reminiscing, I can’t think of one good thing that
came out of that building.” He knew she was thinking about Angel, he wanted to
reach out to her, but he didn’t. He couldn’t, not now, not ever. She walked up
and opened the door, they all followed. “Be careful you guys, this place
doesn’t look too stable.”
“Fine. I hope we all
go under.”
“Why is he even here?
He’s annoying and it’s not like he can fight!”
“Buffy, if we leave
him alone, he’ll stake himself.” Willow explained. Buffy wondered what had
happened, she could bare the thought. She looked back at him and he looked
away.
“And that’s bad
because... fine, whatever, just keep him out of the way. I do not have time for
this. Okay when we get to the library keep a lookout for victims they’re
keeping alive for the sacrifice, getting them out is the first priority.”
“Will do.”
“Okay, you guys
ready?” She asked, her voice was so sweet.
“Let’s rock and
roll.” Xander said.
“Let’s rock and
roll?” These kids made him laugh.
“Sunnydale High if
these walls were still walls, what stories they could tell. Eww, Mayor meat,
extra crispy.”
“I think we’re near
the library.” He picked a spot to watch her fight. She was magnificent, a
wondrous creature. He watched her and he wanted her, why did she have to do
this to him?
------------------------------
“No offense, but you
do look wicked conspicuous.” God could she be anymore slutty? She was
practically drooling all over him. He wasn’t even that cute and he smelled
funny.
“I do?” Stupid ninny.
“Paintball, yeah I was playing paint ball and the aftershock...”
“So you’re one of the
commandos right?” Xander said.
“Commando’s no... do
I know you?” He looked at Spike.
“No I’m just an old
pal of Xander’s here.” He said and quickly looked away. If only he didn’t have
the chip, that boy would be torn apart.
“Well, Riley, do you
wanna go grab a soda with me?” Buffy asked. Spike just glared at her.
“Yeah, I guess.”
“Good, then Will,
I’ll see you later, and don’t wait up.” She winked at Red and brushed past him,
her thigh brushing past his erection. Damn her!
“Jealous Spike?”
Willow asked.
“Jealous? Why would
he be jealous?” Xander asked. “Jealous of Buffy and Riley? It’s not like he and
Buffy... NO! BUFFY AND HIM? NO, NO, THIS IS NOT GOOD! SPIKE YOU STAY AWAY FROM
HER!” Xander screamed.
“XANDER!” Buffy came running
back. “Be quiet. If you scream the school might come down.”
“Buffy, are you
crazy? Do you wanna be with Spike? He’s a vampire.”
“Duh Xander, that’s
the obvious one, but don’t worry about it. It was a good fuck, right Spike?”
She said glaring at him. Spike walked by her glance and disappeared.
“YOU HAD SEX WITH
SPIKE?” She hit him. “Okay, fine, your body, your business, but suddenly
commando boy doesn’t sound that bad.”
“Xander, Riley is
nice. He had to leave, the Initiative called for him, unidentified HST. I like
him, he’s normal and strong.... and I guess those are definite pluses... but
whatever, I don’t wanna think about it. Whadda say we Bronze it for the rest of
the night? I’ve had enough slaying tonight, we deserve some fun.”
“Nah, Xander and I
were gonna watch a movie or something.” Willow said.
“Oh.”
“Wanna come?”
“No, I’ll go study I
guess.”
“Buffy, you should
talk to him.”
“NO. He made it
clear, and that’s fine.” She took off and Xander and Willow got back to the
basement.
“So explain to me
again, what is going on?”
“Xander, it’s not my
place.”
“Willow, tell me.”
“Buffy loves Spike,
Spike loves Buffy. They had an argument, and are both too proud to talk it out.
That’s the story. I think it has something to do with Angel and Dru.”
“And the fact that
he’s a vampire and she’s the Slayer?”
“Possibly. Let’s just
watch the Tonight Show.” Just then the door opened and Spike walked down.
“What’s this, sitting
around watchin’ the telly while there’s evil still afoot? Not very industrious
of you. I say we go out there and kick a little demon ass. What? Can’t go
without your Buffy? Too chicken? Let’s find her, she is the Chosen One after
all. Come on! Vampires... grrr... nasty, let’s annihilate them, for justice and
for the safety of puppies and Christmas right? Let’s fight that evil! Let’s
kill something. Oh come on!”
“Spike, if you want
demons to fight, then you go find Buffy.”
“No.” He sat down.
She laid down and
cried herself to sleep.
