Frankie
This is the story about Frankie.
Cory was having a
really bad weekend back in February 2003. Nothing seemed to be going
right. We decided to stop into a local pet store we had not been in. I check
out all the pet stores in the area to see how clean they are etc.. We had
been wanting to get an iguana for a very long time, but didn't think we were
ready. We were ready now. There are no rescues in this area and I
figured I might be able to save one that would probably have died an inevitable
death if not. Well we asked the store keeper if he had any iguanas and he
did. We looked for the healthiest one and needless to say we brought
Frankie home. We didn't get an age but we figured she was about 3 mths. She was
small enough to fit into this carrier. There is no bad story to tell about
Frankie's life so far. When we brought
him home he went into a 10 gallon tank for a few
weeks. Then progressed to a 30 gallon very fast. We didn't want to
put a very small iguana in a huge cage right away. The tanks where here so it
was no extra expense to do it this way. When he was too big for the 30
gallon though we built him his cage. Cory pondered over the design of the
cage for weeks. I am sure it is not as nice as others, but Frankie seems
to like it and it fits our house size. He designed it with the intensions
of modifying it as Frankie gets bigger.
Once Frankie is big enough she is going to be able to free roam with supervision. We have other pets and don't think it is in the best interest for her to do it right now. We don't want any mishaps. When Frankie is out of her cage, she is always being handle by either Cory or myself.
This is Frankie now. She hates me taking her picture!!
Cory and I bicker over whether or not Frankie is a girl or boy. The pores on her back legs are very small. I have read that is a sign of a girl, but Frankie is still very young. Cory just doesn't want to believe it. I am thinking it is a man thing. There are more females in this house than males so Cory feels if Frankie is a boy that is one more on his side. LOL
UPDATE: We have modified Frankie's cage, because her perches were getting too small. We also got rid of the newspaper and put linoleum tiles on her floor for easier cleaning. Boy was she mad when we did that. Major temper tantrums. Iguanas just don't like change!
I have added a
slide show of the most recent pics of Frankie. You should check them out
Spring is here (May2004) and we have more dandelions that we could ask for... Frankie loves it though.
