History: In his very early teen years, James fell in with the wrong crowd. No matter how much pleading his parents did with him, he wouldn't turn his life around. Then a horrifying delivery changed all that one night. In 2373 Daniel Hoffman and his wife went on a last ditch diplomatic mission to Cardassia in hopes of averting a war. They were then captuired and tortured to death. The video of it was sent to the Hoffman residence on Earth. By this time, Joseph was already in his third year at Starfleet Academy. James was fifteen and in his senior year of High School. James and his younger brother Jacob were the only ones to see the tape, and it crushed James most of all. Then Joseph refused to take a leave of absence to return home. He never went to his parent's funeral and James hated him for it. By this time he was old enough to take care of himself. His younger brother was taken care of by the family's close friend and butler, Arthur Carpathia. His mind set by the death of his father, James turned his life around rather quickly. James graduated as number one in his class. By that, and a few of his father's contacts, he was able to get in to the academy after only one rejection. The death of his parents took almost all the emotion from James. He didn't speak all that often, and when he did it was usually with a quiet, deliberate, and steady tone of voice, most often when he was mad. His harsh gaze and his voice was enough to both gain him respect and fear. Originally intending to be an Engineering Cadet, James changed his mind after he finished his first year and became a Sec/Tac Cadet. He graduated with notes of praise from his instructors on his abilities as a tactician and on his physical prowess, but they also noted that his cold attitude meant that he lacked the qualities of compassion and mercy that Starfleet holds so dear. Though this cold attitude in no way meant that he was disrespectful to his superiors (in fact, he was quite attentive and a fast learner), but it meant that he regarded most positive emotion as a foolish waste of time.
