This weeks article talks about risks involved in a Live in relationship.
Live in Relationships

Are Live in relationships a good idea? Many of us would say - who cares? Like it or not, they are now a reality and the arrangement suits both partners fine.

But the fact is, live ins do not come with a warning sign. This week we talk about a few things to keep in mind such a relationship ends so that a smart girl is not short-changed: although we do understand than a guy may as much be affected, but that's out of scope of this artical.

Don't be lax with legalities
As much as you may want your ex- to pay, legally he doesn't owe you a penny as Indian Law does not recognise live in relationships. Under Domestic Violence Act, 2005, you can claim compensation for abuse by a boyfriend. Otherwise, if a live in relationship is over, neither party can claim maintenance.

Don't merge assets
If you buy joint assets, for example a flat, the law will treat this as a contract between two separate individuals. So there must be legal documentation at the time of purchase stating you and your partners respective shares in the asset or the proceeds from its sale as also what's to be done in the event of a split.

Don't blow your balance
Don't clear out your bank balance in the heat of romance. When its time to call split, you may not be left with much to start afresh. So make sure you have enough stashed up to pay rent deposit on a flat, plus a month's advance rent and set up a new home.

Don't jinx your job
Don't get carried away and cede your financial autonomy to the Boy Friend. That would include suddenly deciding you hate your boss and quitting, or become casual about your job that your boss asks you to leave - just because the Boy Friend is there to pay the bills. That's as unsmart as unsmart can get.

Don't forget your friends
This one is important because many girls do this when they get a guy. Suddenly the guy and his friends become priority and your pals come a distant second. Do keep in mind that if the relationship were to go bust, it's your female pals who'll come forward to assist you.
