The Book of Beers (Original Edition)

The Book of Beers (Scholarly Annotated Edition)

Those who do not have a sense of humor need not read any further.  Religion is always a touchy subject, but if you dare read on – you will laugh, eventually.  Well maybe. Please laugh. Don’t make me sad. Anyway, this work is collaboration between John Beers, Peter Young, and myself.  Written mostly during our senior year in Mrs. D. Seigman’s Humanities class, the idea for the work originated among the many hilarious and witty conversations John and I had.  John and I would compose a few lines of prose: working, reworking, and editing. Peter would usually sleep through the writing sessions (and class).  Perhaps once in a blue moon Peter would contribute something droll and inspiring, sometimes, maybe, not much though.  At the end of each day, I would take our work and type it in to my computer, chopping the prose into verses and formatting it.

What is presented here is the incomplete fruit of those past labors so long ago.  It is the allegorical story of three ancient scribes, unemployed scribes who perhaps have just graduated from their ancient liberal arts scribal school.  These wandering and philosophizing scribes are:

·                                                                                            John the Beers – intelligent, creative, and perhaps drunk rather quite often

·                                                                                            Gene the Redneck – a smart rural boy who known for his lack of tact

·                                                                                            Peter the Chinaman – a man from China (thus the epithet), often dead or asleep, and very unlucky

For some reason, they manage to stumble upon both God and Satan.  They also manage to travel into the supernatural world where they are falsely arrested and falsely accused.  The following can be philosophical, clever, and funny.

Along with the Original Edition, there is also a Scholarly Annotated Edition.  The annotations were begun by Gene Rhea Tucker in 2005 because he is a loser and has nothing better to do in the evenings.  Thus he linked certain terms, concepts, personages, et cetera, with the ever-popular Wikipedia.  This scholarly edition thus proves that through careful study of the text you can learn a lot.  Probably not though.
