How To Go From Zero To Hero
It's a known fact that for every one successful startup clan, there are a dozen failures. Clans such as Combat, OA, and WA serve as examples of what can be accomplished when starting from the ground up. It takes more than a little luck, however, to achieve such a feat.
The main point here is not to focus on skill, but rather your social status. It's not impossible to show some social proficiency and make friends. You need to understand that as a startup clan, you have absolutely no right to proclaim yourself as "elite" or claim that you are only recruiting veteran players. No one is going to take you seriously, so accept the fact you are low on the social scale and work slowly upwards. Start by making friends with the right people, including well known players and respected major clans. Compliment skills, crack jokes, tell stories, and ask to play games together. It's not difficult and showing a friendly side of yourself will always invite others to be friendly to you. As strange as it sounds, work on your reputation before you work on the clan.
The size of your clan has nothing to do with ability, reputation, or organization. Therefore, you should be mindful of who you recruit to join your clan. The best player in the map is not who you need early on in your clan's career. What you need are the people who are friendly, dedicated, and personable. How do you find such people? Avoiding recruitment based on scores in game is a good start. You really shouldn't care too much about a player's skill when you're looking to recruit people to build your clan. The thing that keeps a clan together is how much the members enjoy playing together. You need people who will serve as future officers of the clan, therefore your initial roster should be small and stay that way to ensure you build friendships with one another.
This obviously makes it clear that mass recruitment is a horrible idea. If you go about this process by spamming "who wants to join my clan," you won't last long. Bottom line here, go about recruitment very selectively. Talent should be last on your set of requirements, instead focusing on personality and social skills.
In addition, to help achieve your goal of clan recognition, build a webpage and fill it with content on the clan. Roster, news, links, clan history, awards, interviews, and everything in-between. You should come up with a gimmick that will get people to visit your site, such as the DS Interview of the Month. Advertise your site like crazy (but don't be irritating) and get it posted on every Ants information site out there, such as AGN. Lastly, update the site at least three times a week, ensuring that any new recruits get listed ASAP. Getting people to visit your clan site is part of achieving recognition in Ants.
Always remember that your members should be friendly and personable in Ants, rather than jerks. If the key to success is social adequacy, cussing, spamming, or picking fights will do nothing but further place your new clan further behind on the success ladder. Respect the community and it will eventually respect you back.
If you can understand that respect and recognition is earned, then you will do well. Establishing yourself as a good person in the community will take you all the way.
Proving to the community that you expect recognition, respect, and acceptance of cocky proclamations will lead you in the same direction 95% of all startup clans go... nowhere.
