Clans In the New Age
Too Much Of A Good Thing?
The clan mentality has changed incredibly over the years in various games online. Some for the better, but in many ways for the worse. Original clans were made for a place of belonging. Most of these clans were firm, strong and adequately stable clans. Their players were experienced, talented, and arguably, some of the best every to grace the game. Joining these clans consisted of proving yourself over time by gaining skills while improving your social status in the community. The leaders were generally impartial, not taking people based on favoritism, but on skill. In total, there were few clans and on average, each of these clans had between 10 - 15 players. If you were in a clan, it was something to be proud of. If you were not, the idea was to prove yourself, so that you could join the few clans that existence. A tag by the name meant something, it gave you reconization, and people looked up to you.
Currently in many games played today a new mundane clan is created every week or so. Some of them are strong clans that have been around for a while even the beginning. In general though, the mentality has changed way to the right. Most of the new clans have no backing from skilled or even respectable players. They recruit by asking if anyone wants to tryout and then tell them to change their name. The art of proving yourself to the clan players has diminished to something more of random "does my name appeal to them" attitude. Skillwise, clans are lacking. People no longer look up to you if you are in a clan. The clan does not have the same influence as it did before. Leaders bring in their friends or virtual anyone that meet basic requirements set by them. Whereas before the clans had structure, leader(s), recruiters, scouts, etc., the current clans have a leader, and a group of friends.
The current state of many clans is sad. The most common thing today is to hear a clan complain. The pride that wearing a clan tag gave is lost. There are very few of the older clans remaining. Some revivals have been seen, where the clan has recruited a few of the stronger people to fill their holes.
In conclusion, everyone can now say they are in a clan. If you get bored, you just create a bad webpage, and add a tag to your name. The reason for clans though, was not that anyone can be in one, it was meant to prove yourself as one of the best. Hopefully some of the newer clans will begin to understand where they have started going astray, and change their structure, so we can have what we had before. Quality, not quantity.
