South Africa has
embarked on the 16 Days of activism against abuse of women and children. At the closing of the 16 days, on the 10th
December 2004, a Carols by Candlelight will be hosted at the Bluff Showgrounds
in Durban.
The light from
these carols will signify many things:
- light at the end of the tunnel for abused
women and children,
- light of a bright future
- the warmth of love and peace for all
mankind,
but most importantly,
- the light that Isaiah spoke about when he said,
“Arise and Shine!” which is Jesus Christ.

As this is a sing-along event, here are the words:
Away in a Manger, no crib for a bed,
The little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head.
The stars in the bright sky looked down where he lay,
The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay
The cattle are lowing the baby awakes
but little Lord Jesus no crying he makes.
I love you Lord Jesus; look down from the sky
and stay by my side until morning is nigh.
Be near me Lord Jesus I ask you to stay
close by me for ever, and love me, I pray.
Bless all the dear children in your tender care,
and fit us for heaven, to live with you there.
Once in royal David's city
Stood a lowly cattle-shed
Where a mother laid her Baby
In a manger for His bed;
Mary was that mother mild,
Jesus Christ her little child.
Oh little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by
Yet in they dark streets shineth, the everlasting light
The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight.
How silently, how silently, the wondrous gift is given
So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of his heaven
No ear may hear his coming, but in this world of sin
Where meek souls will receive him still, the dear Christ enters in.
Oh holy Child of Bethlehem, descend to us we pray
Cast out our sin and enter in, be born in us today
We hear the Christmas angels, the great glad tidings tell
O come to us, abide with us, our lord Emanuel.
Hark! the herald angels sing Glory to the
newborn King
peace on earth and mercy mild
God and sinners reconcile.
Joyful all ye nations rise join the triumph of
the skies;
with the angelic host proclaim
'Christ is born in Bethlehem'
Hark! the herald angels sing
Glory to the newborn King.
Christ by highest heaven adored! Christ the
everlasting Lord
late in time behold him come,
offspring of a virgin's womb.
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see; hail, the
incarnate deity,
pleased as Man with to dwell,
Jesus, our Emmanuel!
Hark! the herald angels sing,
Glory to the newborn King.
Hail, the heaven-born Prince of peace!
Hail the Sun of righteousness!
Light and life to all he brings, risen with
healing in his wings.
Mild he lays his glory by, born that man no more
may die,
born to raise the suns of earth, born to give
them second birth.
Hark! the herald angels sing,
Glory to the newborn King.
While shepherds watched their flocks by night,
all seated on the ground,
the angel of the Lord came down, and glory shone
around.
"Fear not," said he, for mighty dread
had seized their troubled mind;
"Glad tidings of great joy I bring to you
and all mankind.
"To you, in David's town, this day is born
of David's line
a Savior, who is Christ the Lord; and this shall
be the sign:
"The heavenly Babe you there shall find to
human view displayed,
all meanly wrapped in swathing bands, and in a
manger laid."
Thus spake the seraph, and forthwith appeared a
shining throng
of angels praising God, who thus addressed their
joyful song:
"All glory be to God on high and on earth
be peace;
good will henceforth from heaven to me begin and
never cease."
Angels from the realms of glory,
Wing your flight o'er all the earth
Ye who sang creations story,
Now proclaim messiah's birth
Gloria in Excelsis Deo
Shepherds in the field abiding,
Watching oe'r your flocks by night
God with man is now residing,
Yonder shines the infant light.
Gloria in Excelsis Deo
O holy night the stars are brightly shining
It is the night of our dear Saviour's birth
Long lay the world in sin and error pining
‘Til He appeared and the soul felt its worth
A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices
For yonder breaks a new glorious morn
Fall on your knees
O hear the angels' voices
O night divine, O night when Christ was born
O night divine, O night
O night divine
Silent night! holy night!
All is calm all is bright
round yon virgin mother and child
Holy infant so tender and mild
sleep in heavenly peace!
Silent night! holy night!
Shepherds quake at the sight
glories stream from heaven afar
heavenly hosts sing Alleluia
Christ the Saviour is born!
Silent night! holy night!
Son of God love's pure light
radiant beams from thy holy face
with the dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus, Lord at they birth.
O come all ye faithful joyful and triumphant
Oh come ye O come ye to Bethlehem;
come and behold him born the King of angels;
O come let us adore him Christ the Lord.
Sing choirs of angels sing in exultation
sing all ye citizens of heaven above;
glory to God in the highest:
O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord.
Yea, Lord, we greet thee, born this happy
morning;
Jesus, to thee be glory given;
word of the Father, now in flesh appearing:
O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord.
The first Noel the angel did say
was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they
lay:
in fields where they lay a keeping their sheep
on a cold winter's night that was so deep.
Noel Noel Noel Noel
born is the King of Israel.
They looked up and saw a star
shining in the east beyond them far:
and to the earth it gave great light
and so it continued both day and night.
Noel Noel Noel Noel
born is the King of Israel.
Then entered in those wise men three,
fell reverently upon their knee,
and offered there in his presence
their gold and myrrh and frankincense.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,
born is the kind of Israel.
Then let us all with one accord
sing praises to our heavenly Lord,
that hath made heaven and earth of nought,
and with his blood mankind has bought.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,
born is the King of Israel.
Joy to the world! The Lord is come:
let earth receive her King!
Let every heart prepare him room
and heaven and nature sing, and heaven and
nature sing,
and heaven and heaven and nature sing.
Joy to the earth! the Saviour reigns:
let men their songs employ
while fields and floods rocks hills and plains
repeat the sounding joy.
He rules the earth with truth and grace,
and makes the nations prove
the glories of his righteousness
and wonders of his love.
I'll be home for
Christmas You can count on me
Please have snow And mistletoe
And presents 'neath the
tree
Christmas eve will find
me Where the love light gleams
I'll be home for
Christmas
If only in my dreams
I'll be home for
Christmas If only in my dreams
If only in my dreams
Dashing through the snow, In a one horse open
sleigh
O'er the hills we go, Laughing all the way.
Bells on bobtail ring, Making spirits bright.
What fun it is to ride and sing, A sleighing
song tonight.
Chorus:
Jingle bells jingle bells, Jingle all the way!
Oh what fun it is to ride, In a one horse open
sleigh!
You better watch out, You better not cry
Better not pout, I'm telling you why
Santa Claus is coming to town
He's making a list, And checking it twice;
Gonna find out Who's naughty and nice
Santa Claus is coming to town
He sees you when you're sleeping
He knows when you're awake
He knows if you've been bad or good
So be good for goodness sake!
O! You better watch out! You better not cry
Better not pout, I'm telling you why
Santa Claus is coming to town
Santa Claus is coming to town
We wish you a Merry Christmas We wish you a
Merry Christmas
We wish you a Merry Christmas And a Happy New
Year.
