Today, hobby radio is enjoyed by many millions of people of all ages throughout the world. It does not discriminate against age, sex, race or creed. For the last hundred years, the hand of friendship has reached out across the globe in the form of Amateur Radio, and in more recent times, Citizen Band Radio. Radio has no borders, and under certain conditions it is possible to communicate with other radio enthusiasts in the far corners of the world, on just a few watts of power... less than what it takes to light an ordinary light-bulb. In Australia and the Pacific region, radio still plays an important part in the everyday life of those living in isolated areas as a form of communications. The Australian 27MHz Citizen Band follows the same format as that in the United States of America. It was legalised here in 1977, and in the following year, there were more than 200,000 licences issued. When the CB service was introduced to Australia, it was to be used only for short distance communications, and overseas contacts were certainly not encouraged by restrictions on antenna types and low power. In 1981, the Dept. of Communications in Australia reviewed the Citizen Band Radio Service (CBRS) and decided to retain the concept of "short distance" radio within the geographical area of Australia, but DX communication was still discouraged. Today, the numbers of 11 meter operators is vastly underestimated by Amateurs and others alike. Providing sensible precautions are taken and good operating principles practised, there is much to be gained. It is my intention not to encourage any illegal activity, but to inform all who work on the so called "Free Band". With the continued increase in solar activity, which has a great effect on radio propagation, DX-ing on the 11-Meter band has become an enjoyable way of meeting and making friends world wide. For many, it is their first step towards becoming Amateur Radio operators. For many more, it will be an opportunity to learn something about the many cultures that make up this world we share, and realise there is no difference between any of us. We are one race, only ignorance separates us. Besides radio, I also have many other interests, such as photography, oil painting and a love of our natural environment, which over the years has greatly increased my interest in Aboriginal people, their culture and tragic history. Australia has become a multi-cultural society, and the dream of Australia being a land of "Many Nations, One People" is well within our reach. However, we still have racism . Perhaps it is something to do with our colonial past. Nevertheless, one does not have to look hard to find it, and it might be sometime before this country is rid of such ignorance. Even shortly after the Sydney Olympics 2000, - an international celebration of humanity- some Australian politicians* who should know better, still come out with insensitive remarks which do nothing for Reconciliation with the Aboriginal. There are others, who suffer from bouts of xenophobia when it comes to a few unfortunates who drift to our shores and are held behind razor-wire in interment camps for years at unacceptable moral costs, .... forgetting that this great country was carved out by migrants from all corners of the world. (From: The Lizard Eaters by Douglas Lockwood ) Well, I hope you enjoy your visit and that you will find it interesting and informative. Apart from the hobby radio aspect, that you understand something more about the "Lucky Country" we all call home. "South Pacific Calling!" is my personal home page and it's not all about radio! Here you will also find a link to my other site, "DX-Pacific", which will give you an insight to various radio activity and propagation in this region. Recent additions include, "A Tail or Two"; a diary of two Blue Tongues, and "Walkabout". Please take a minute to sign the Guest Book before you leave. A little encouragement goes a long long way. This site is always being updated and improved upon almost daily. Just like this world we share, we can always take a few more steps to make it a better place. Thanks for dropping in!
