| Before You Buy A Parrot... | ||||||||
| (Of course, a little preaching is unavoidable so bear with me and I'll try to be brief) ...Consider these facts: Parrots have long lifespans. Make sure you understand the commitment. Parrots are not completely domesticated. You will not get the level of obedience from a parrot that you do from a dog. Parrots are loud. I've known many disappointed people to say "But I thought I bought a quiet breed of parrot." If you want quiet, a parrot is not for you. Consider your living situation too. Fellow apartment dwellers may not find your parrot's calls as enchanting as you do. Parrots are messy. Poop and feathers and seeds Oh My! Parrots are expensive. From the original purchase price to accessories to vet visits, a parrot will cost a pretty penny if you care for it properly...and you *will* care for it properly, right? Parrots need attention.. How much time and attention can you give your parrot? How much time can be spent in socialization and training? Will other family members participate? Are some family members unable to "appreciate" parrots? Parrots are temperamental. They may decide they don't like a certain person and try biting him every chance they get. A common household item may be percieved as a danger and the alarm will be sounded every time it is in view. |
