Awards Assembly
-By Natalie Caraballo

On March 11, 2005 Copper Mountain College (CMC) had an awards assembly in the cafeteria. This awards assembly is for the Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS) and Transfer Empowerment Program (TEP) students. The evening was for the students, who have done academically well prior semester. They are being awarded a certificate for their GPA achievements.

It was a full house in the cafeteria. Representing EOPS was the Coordinator Jackie Hanselman and her Program Assistant Pam Hoyt, and for TEP the Director, Carol Lasquade and Carman Diamond TEP Counselor were present. It was nice to see everyone interacting with one another. Dinner was served at 7 pm and shortly after that was dessert. Bruce Campbell provided the dinner and the dessert. Let me just say that the food was great. It was a successful night.

Before Hoyt started handing out awards, Hanselman introduced a guest speaker, a former EOPS/TEP CMC graduate Heather Hurley. Hurley graduated in the spring of 2002. When she enrolled at this college she was a single mother and she still is. She worked hard to get her Associates Degree in English and she is still working hard for her Masters. She spoke about these two great programs. They helped her achieve some of her goals during college and beyond. She spoke to the students about taking advantage of these programs, and how these programs are here for the students they are here for us and to help us with whatever we need. She also spoke about how it is so much easier for students to study here at a small college, but when students attend a university it is harder. There are triple the number of students and students have to make themselves known if they want their professor to remember their name. Hurley ended her speech with Whatever you do, do not give up even if you feel burnt out just keep going; there is an end to the tunnel. She added, If you feel the need to skip one of your classes because you need a break; do it, but do not take a semester off.

It was an astonishing evening; twenty-six students received awards for their outstanding GPA. This was an event for students to remember, no matter what, they could achieve what ever they put their minds to and this is proof. I know that they are proud of themselves and so are their parents. Congratulations to all.
