Sports Complex Coming
-By JoAnn Lomo

A multi purpose sports complex is on its way to Copper Mountain College (CMC). According to Chief Business Officer of CMC, Kindred Murillo, the sports complex will make CMC, More of a real college. It will help bring a full college experience to the students. Construction should start in October or November of 2005 and end January 2007.
An indoor gymnasium of about 37,000 square feet will have the ability to hold over 2,000 people and includes a portable stage. This indoor complex will have a workout facility and an adaptive physical education program for disabled students. The outdoor part of the complex contains 18 acres of sports fields. It will hold 4-8 basketball courts, 2-3 soccer fields, 2 softball fields, 4-8 tennis courts, and 2 field houses that have storage and restrooms.
The total cost of the sports complex comes to a whopping $15 million in which 90% will be state funded. The other 10% will come from the CMC Foundation, which raises money to help the college. Building contractors have the chance to bid in July on this grand project.
Murillo explained that the complex overall is, Good for partnerships in the community.
The sports complex can be rented out to organizations that may need space for a large gathering of people, such as for a concert. Agreements with other sport teams will allow them to use the complex, bringing the CMC community together with others. When children come to play their sport, exposure to CMC will show them that college is a positive place to be.
Knowing all too well that the students will appreciate the new sports complex, Murillo said, I hope the students want it.
