Black History Gospel
-By Ann Marie German

Black History Month is here again. Carol Lasquade, who is the Director for the Transfer Empowerment Program (TEP), suggested that we celebrated this special month. This is the first that Copper Mountain College (CMC) participated. Black History Month was celebrated during lunch hour at noon in the cafeteria, February 23, Black History Month. Ann Marie German and Kim Frye were the two women that sang gospel songs and lead a worship and praise ceremony.

Carlos Lasquade said, This was a good idea for the college because (CMC) never had any event before for Black History Month. Other colleges have participated, and it is a positive step toward the future and right direction for all diverse students to feel a sense of belonging and includingness because this is what makes America great.

Carol Lasquade also mentioned about, the diversity of food that every ethnicity favors, like Chinese food and Mexican food, which she is a lover of Mexican food, and Martin Luther King, who is one of the greatest heroes of our lifetime. All the steps that he took, and the treatments that he endured in his life for his people to be free.

Carol Lasquade went on to speak about the progress of Black people and their history, and some awesome black people who contributed to black society such as, Maya Angelou, a poet and professor, Fredrick Douglas a great writer, and Rosa Park Parks who refused to sit at the back of the bus. Most importantly, Carol Lasquade quoted, The color of our skin should not matter. In 1994 Brown vs. Broad of Education is an amazing thing; black people wouldnt be in this school if it wasnt for Attorney Thurgood Marshall who defended the right for all black people to be treated equally in schools. Carol Lasquade kept on talking about other wonderful role models and the progress they made for today.

Carol Lasquade continued, Ann Marie German and Kim Frye were a blessing to us all. The program blesses us because the two women are passionate and faith believers. For next year, it will be even better and more prepared with poetry and the reading of Black History, history.

The Black History Month celebration in the cafeteria was awesome, and filled with the Holy Ghost. For the two women, their songs and testimonies were touching and heart felt by others, too.
