Breaking into Print
-By Joy Fitzpatrick

For writers who want to break into print, Copper Mountain College (CMC) offers
a community service class titled, A Beginners Guide to Getting Published. The last class that was led by LeeAnne Krusemark, was held on Saturday Jan 29th.
Krusemark stated, No one should feel they are too much of a novice to take this class, because I take them step-by-step through the process.
Krusemark instructs students on how to get their ideas into print, with a tip on how to become a published writer overnight. She covers in detail among other things, getting started, manuscript basics and format, the query letter format, mailing submissions, and she provides resources for further information.
When discussing the first time her work was published, she admitted, I sent my first magazine article to 13 different magazines simultaneously. The first letter I got was an acceptance letter. She was elated and thought it would always go this way. She then received 12 very painful rejection letters which she said, brought me down to earth.
Krusemark is in the public relations business and was at Cerritos College five years ago helping out at a business conference. She talked about the mistakes she had made, and they suggested she tell people about it and invited her to teach. She has been teaching this class at many colleges since.
Community service classes are no credit classes that anyone in the community can take. Each class meets one or two times, and depending on the class, they are offered one to several times a year. There are many to choose from, and they cater to a wide variety of interests and needs. A wealth of information can be obtained from experienced professionals.
