Needful Programs Getting Cut
-By Natalie Caraballo

Students we need your help! President Bush released the federal budget and he plans on cutting certain federal grants that help high school and college students with their educational assistance. The programs that are being targeted are the TRIO programs.

TRIO stands for three programs Upward Bound, Talent Search and Student Support Services, these were designed to help students in first generation and low income families to enter into an institute of higher learning stated, TEP Director Carol Lasquade. Lasquade added, These are the sister programs to our Transfer Empowerment Program, (TEP) a Student Support Services TRIO grant. If those programs get cut then TEP could be next on the list.

TEP is a federal grant funded program sponsored by the Department of Education. This program provides services to students who have economic, cultural or educational barriers to considering and achieving transfer to a university. TEP focuses on helping students meet their goals of graduating from Copper Mountain College, inspiring and preparing them to be eligible to continue on to a four-year degree. Opportunities and services include: transfer counseling, advising, and camps tours to four-year colleges and universities campuses. The information is stated in the Copper Mountain College Catalog.

What can students do to make sure President Bush does not succeed in his request to zero fund two of the TRIO Programs? Students can write, fax or email their Congressman or Representative as soon as possible to let them know these programs need to be fully funded. They have proven themselves successful for the last forty years and this assault aimed at low income students can not be tolerated! exclaimed Lasquade.

Students we have to make a lot of noise, because if we dont speak up who will?

If you would like to write Congress, you have to make sure that the letter contains city, state and zip code listed. If the person that opens email / letters in a congressional office cannot prove that this person is a constituent, they discard it.
