Students with Abilities
-By Catey Cahill

Students with Abilities, is an active service club on the Copper Mountain College (CMC) campus, and was created in 1991 by Dr. Cheyenne Bonnell. They have been involved in bringing things to campus and raising money to help others.

The club has a life of its own, commented Club Advisor, Dr. Cheyenne Bonnell, adding, They are so passionate about helping others.

The club has done many things for the campus such as: helping to bring the handicap accessible door to Student Services (phase III), bringing ramps up to ADA codes, and raising money to bring soda and snack machines to every phase of the campus, with brail on every machine. They award two students per school year with a scholarship. One thing they are especially proud of is sending children to summer camp sponsored by the Angel View Crippled Childrens Foundation. They have also marched in parades throughout the Morongo Basin, which caused one club member to introduce a wheelchair division to a 5K and a 12-mile charity walk.

The secret of its (the club) success is we raise money to do good things for other people! exclaimed Dr. Bonnell.

To be able to do so much service for others requires a lot of fundraising on their behalf as well. The members hold many bake sales throughout the semesters, one of which will be happening on March 17th in Phase I from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. The club also does 50/50 drawings for anyone who wants to participate. Another very important source of their fundraising is the recycling program that you see around campus. Graduate from CMC and current club member, Anne Dawson, stated, I think the club is very instrumental on getting things done on campus.

The club has been recognized by the Basin Wide Foundation in the past and was given a breakfast where they were presented with an award for all theyve done for others. They also receive a yearly letter from the President of Angel View to express how impressed they (Angel View) are with how students with disabilities contribute to others.

To become a club member, all you have to do is show up to the meetings. The club welcomes you whether you are disabled or not. Meetings are held at Bruces Coyote Kitchen, in Phase III, at 3:00 PM, on Thursdays. The following dates are the scheduled meetings: Feb. 10th and 24th, March 10th, April 7th and 21st, and May 5th.
