CMC Transfer Students to UC Riverside
-By Mary Bierman

On March 1, 2005 the Outreach Counselor, Joyce Higashida came to meet with students in the Transfer Center. Students wishing to know more about University of California Riverside (UCR) signed up prior to the meeting to discuss possible requirements, eligibility, and what to expect leaving a community college, like Copper Mountain College (CMC) to a university. She freely discussed these questions along with what UCR looks for with majors, and also life styles for students staying at the campus.

For students wanting to major in Science of some sort, Engineering, or even Business Administration, Higashida recommends UCR. She explained that most Professors teaching such fields have written books, been out in the field, and when not teaching are out in the work force.

The social life outside of the classroom is what someone makes of it. Instead of just study and class, UCR also offers students the opportunity to go to clubs, and a Recreate Center where students can take trips to different places, and even take other classes.

With great activities and places to live such as apartments, suites, on-campus-housing, and family housing, the only down side to it are for those who can not afford these places. There are no satellite campuses linking to UCR. Higashida recommends to students who will be commuting back and forth to UCR to look into a commuting service provided on the campus, and to carpool if possible. As for the classes, she says it would be easier for students to bunch them into days, so students arent going back and forth everyday; saves on gas.

Students who are a little uneasy about leaving their families or going to a larger classroom of about 100 students UCR will provide help to get students through.

Higashida suggested, Talk to counselors, resident assistants, and mentor transfers who are preparing as we speak for incoming transfer students. She explained that resident assistants are more for dorms and freshmen; however, they are still willing to talk to transfer students finding it a little hard to adjust.

CMC graduates of 2005 should have already signed up last November. Classes start in September. Higashida suggests for graduates of 2006 to sign up before this years dead line, for they will not accept students any other time but spring. If there are any other questions or concerns about UCR the website is www.UCR.edu. This website has everything, including the class listings, and even tours of the campus (if student places a reservation).

Joyce Higashida will be visiting CMC one last time this semester on Tuesday, April 12 at the Transfer Center. Students interested in meeting with her or if they are interested in another college such as Berkley, they can sign up there for an appointment at the Workforce Development Center.
