A Young Marine’s Transition to Being a Student
-by Natalie Caraballo

Being a Lance Corporal in the United States Marine Corps and a part-time student at Copper Mountain College (CMC) Lance Cpl. Manuel Moran is finding it hard to adjust.

When asked if he has a hard time transitioning from being a marine to a student, Moran said, “It is hard to transition myself from the military lifestyle to student lifestyle. I’m used to being told what to do and when to do it in the military, but as a college student, I am my own person”. Moran is a tank mechanic and an infantryman. He repairs the tanks if there is a malfunction. After he leaves his vehicle, he is an infantryman; his job is to point and shoot. “There’s really not much to it,” he noted. He is currently taking seven units at CMC.

When asked if his job interferes with school, he said, “It does when I have to work late or go to the field to do certain tank exercises.” According to Moran, he is not going to school to further his career in the Marine Corps; he said, “That would be a negative.”

Thanks to Moran, we as students, now have a clue what it is like to be a Marine and a student at the same time.
