EOPS, Available to CMC Students
-by Jennifer M. Hill

What is the EOPS program all about? Extended Opportunities Programs & Services (EOPS) gives academically and financially disadvantaged students the help they need to succeed. Students have questions about EOPS and here are the answers.

According to the EOPS Program Assistant, Pam Hoyt, there are currently openings for Copper Mountain College (CMC) students this semester. EOPS is also accepting applications from students who plan to attend CMC in the near future. This program helps both academically and financially disadvantaged students. Requirements for being considered for EOPS include students having a Board of Governors Fee (BOG) A or BOG B waiver, and must be enrolled in twelve units.

When asked how students qualify as academically disadvantaged, Hoyt answered, There are several ways for a student to qualify as academically disadvantaged. One is by the assessment test, which would indicate if that student needs to take any remedial classes. Two, if a student did not receive a General Equivalency Degree (GED) or High School diploma. Three, the student is the first member of his or her family to attend college.

EOPS helps students currently enrolled in their program systematically. According to Hoyt, We set up students with their own counselor; that counselor will create an educational plan for each student. Students do have to have a major. Then we make sure that they are only taking classes that go toward their goal. EOPS also provides tutoring and workshops to those students in the program. We offer book service, school supplies, book loan service, parking permits, counseling, and when a student gets ready to transfer to a UC or CSU, we help them to fill out some application fee waivers and we also offer emergency loans.

How has EOPS changed and where are they headed? Hoyt said, It has changed drastically since Jackie and I came on board. Jackie and I work well as a team; we balance each other out. She comes up with the great ideas and I help implement those ideas. She added, I feel that we are a real program now. Our future goal is to detect early on, the students that need that extra help."

The EOPS staff includes Program Director, Jackie Hanselman, Pam Hoyt, two student workers, Cecy Ramirez and Amber Ferguson, and E.O.P.S. Counselors, Sandi Hauf and Cynthia Vasquez. They all work together successfully and help CMC students.
