Desert Essentials
-By Kimberley Seals

As the weather begins to get warmer, there are a few essentials that desert residents need to keep in mind. These things are important as they sometimes are a matter of life and death. The heat here in the high desert is of some concern. It affects everyone, especially the very young, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses and pets.
It is essential to remember to always have water in your possession. The average person needs one gallon of water a day here in the desert, but during the heat, there is an even greater need. There should be an increase to two gallons per day, and even more if you spend time outdoors doing some sort of strenuous activity. Of course, you should stay indoors or in cooler areas during the hottest parts of the day, but understandably, there are times when being outdoors is unavoidable. During those times, you should have your water; sunscreen should be applied to all exposed skin, and wear a hat with a brim and sunglasses. A hat is one of the most important pieces of clothing you could own in the desert. It helps to shade your face, avoiding burns to sensitive skin areas and it also helps to absorb sweat while protecting your eyes.
Another essential point to remember is that there are snakes and other dangerous creatures living in the desert, which are active in the warmer months. To avoid these creatures, stay away from areas where there are no paths, travel with a buddy, and watch where you put your hands and feet.
Even a leisurely drive could put you at risk for dehydration, burns and animal encounters. Always remember to bring a supply of water with you wherever you go. Apply sunscreen, travel with someone, and stay indoors whenever possible during the warmest part of the day. Most of all enjoy the beautiful tranquil desert surroundings.
