RGB Light Show at CMC
-By Cyndera Quackenbush

Art instructor Spelman Downer was there in the changing of the seasons to bring Copper Mountain College (CMC) and the surrounding community to the spectacular natural, visual experience of Earth Works Now 2005. For this spring, he is back in charge to bring another form of art to view: RGB Light.

RGB Light is an exploration in digital slide dissolve presentations. It is the additive color system that relates both to human vision and electronic display of visual images, particular to the computer projecting RGB files. The one hundred year old dissolve technique from cinema, video and TV consists of two images dissolving across each other, where at one point you can see both pictures simultaneously, described Downer about the upcoming show.

More than a dozen artists are expected to show their work this year, and many will include different types of music along with their visual presentation. The subjects that the dissolve shows will embrace is full of variety and though many of the students will be using digital photography in their dissolve shows, it is not restricted to it.

Its a way to present work across all disciplines: collage, painting, drawing, computer graphics and obviously photography whether it be film or digital. Were also interested in the use of small video clips, especially those shot as quick time movies with the new digital cameras, stated Downer.

The recent Earth Works Now show of 2005 was a huge success, attracting artists and visitors worldwide. With that in mind, where could RGB Light be headed in the near future?

Im thinking big. Im thinking national prominence. Theres no reason why we cant, stated Downer with a familiar flare of ambitious excitement. The networks on the national level are great- it could be a juried event. Im building a state of the art exhibition theatre at my home that will be ready in Spring 2006.

While the future looks bright for RGB Light, it can be viewed in the near present. The show will take place in the CMC art rooms 121/122 Thurs, 3 to 5 pm, April 29.
