Bowl-a-thon Benefits CMC Scholarships
-By Joy Fitzpatrick

Cheers and laughter filled the Bowladium in Twentynine Palms on Friday March 11th when Copper Mountain Colleges (CMC) Classified Senate held a bowl-a-thon to benefit a scholarship program for CMC students and employees.

Classified Senate President Lisa Perossier said, The bowl-a-thon is the biggest fundraiser from the Classified Senate. This bowl-a-thon raised about 650-dollars.

The fun filled evening started at 6 p.m. when CMC students, employees and others arrived and formed ten pre-registered teams of four persons each. The crash of bowling balls and falling pins mixed with numerous calls of encouragement. Participants bowled their best to collect on pledges they had previously secured.

To show their enthusiasm, two teams each wore identical shirts with their own logo printed on them. One was from the Students with Abilities Club, and the other was The Coco Puffs who each work in the front offices. They chose that name after the colleges computer main frame named Coco.

Among the participants was CMC employee Cecilia (Cece) Simpson and her 11 and 14 year old sons who have participated in the bowl-a-thon for the last three years. Simpson said that last year her sons brought in about 100-dollars each from sponsors, and she is happy they are giving back to the community.

It was also Human Resources Specialist Dani Lassetters last day at CMC. There was a cake and gifts to celebrate her retirement after serving over six years at CMC.

A raffle was held throughout the evening, and tickets for the drawing sold for a chance to win any of the 14 prizes donated by area businesses and Las Vegas casinos.

Lassetter occasionally announced the winning ticket numbers, and shouts of excitement rang out each time a prize was collected

The event is rotated every year between Yucca Bowl in Yucca Valley and the Bowladium in Twentynine Palms. This was the fifth annual bowl-a-thon which Lassetter said was previously organized by the students, but they stopped, so now we (the Classified Senate) do it so the kids can still get their money.

The proceeds went into the Classified Senate Scholarship fund. Applicants must be current CMC students or employees. For more information about scholarships, call CMCs admissions office at (760)366-3791 or toll free at (866)366-3791.
