Graduates Not Happy
-By Natalie Caraballo

Some students that are graduating this spring are dissatisfied with the administration here at Copper Mountain College (CMC). They are not happy because their spring semester grades will not be calculated into their overall grade point average, (GPA), before graduation.

A number of students are wondering why their final grades are not included into their final overall GPA. Students, who are graduating this spring, will receive a graduation packet. It includes a document explaining all about graduation and graduating with honors. The document read, Graduation is held the last day of the spring semester when the majority of spring grades have not yet been received or posted to transcripts and graduation programs are already printed. For the purpose of the graduation ceremony, honors will be calculated on grades earned through the Fall Semester of 2004. However, final grades for spring and summer semester graduates will be available and included in the calculation of honors for notation on the official transcripts and diplomas, which will be available several weeks later.

So what does all of this mean? Well if your GPA is at a 3.42, and you know for sure that you are going to get all As and you were expecting to graduate with honors, you will not. The reason is because your spring semester grades will not be included for graduation. However, it will be noted on your final transcripts and diploma.

Students feel that the administration should tell the instructors they need the grades for the students that are graduating before graduation, and graduation should not be held during the same week as final exams. It is only fair to the students, said Elida Santana a student who will graduate spring 2006. Students who have worked really hard for their grades deserve to have that last GPA added into their graduation.

CMC graduating student, Kimberley Seals noted, It is not fair to not count the spring semester GPA, and yet the school will count the classes that do not count for graduation. Another graduating student, Dwight Garner stated, It is irresponsible not to include the grades.

For many students who will walk for graduation, it means a lot to them and their families. It is a beginning for many of them and many will keep moving forward. Congratulations Graduates.
