What we do...
Night Observations - The club meets bi-weekly under the stars to discuss a variety of topics.  Each meeting focuses on a different aspect of Astronomy.  We work in the areas of literature with Mythology and Constellations, history with Founding Astronomers, math and science through the studies of Newton, Einstein, & Hubble, philosophy by examining "the Big Bang Theory", and debate the existence of life on other planets.  There is a fine line between science and imagination in Astronomy.  What we know must exist is something we may never see.
Star Muggings - We are guilty of the crime of inflicting science upon the unexpecting public.  A Star Mugging (AKA Sidewalk Astronomy) is where members of the group pick a location in town that we have found to be a high traffic area for walkers.  We set up a table and have binoculars on hand, then ask everyone who comes by if they want to see something in the sky.  Our goal is to get people to learn something.  "That's a planet?  I thought it was a star.", or "I didn't know you could see other galaxies in the sky" are statements we want to here.  Be on the lookout.  The only thing we leave behind is fired-up brain cells.
Astrophotography -  No, we don't collect pictures of the Jetsons' dog Astro.  We are learning to take pictures of stellar objects with an SLR camera by extending the shutter speed to be open for up to 30 seconds.  This allows the lense (35-105mm) to collect more light.  You would be amazed at the power of light that travels over hundreds of light years.  See our gallery of pictures here.
Star Parties - Star Parties are organized astronomy rallies that bring amature astronomers from all over the area.  A South Dakota Star Party will be held at the Newton Hills Park south of Canton, SD June 27-30. You can find out more about this event by visiting the Sioux Empire Astronomy Club's site.
