chapter 9
...Miss unafraid... Miss out of my way... Miss don't let a man interfere...

Kelsey had stood in the recording booth, watching her students work the recording equipment that she had previously guarded with her life.  Prior to the students she had taken on from the University of Pittsburgh, Kelsey was iffy about anyone touching the sound board and the external equipment that was connected to it.  She had all the settings the way she wanted them, and if anyone touched it, they would more than likely get mixed up.

Miss on her own... Miss almost grown... Miss never let a man help her off her throne...

But she was on the other side of the glass for once, watching as the students played with the buttons and knobs, hopefully getting a decent recording out of her "Miss Independent" song.

By keeping her heart protected, she'd never ever feel rejected... Little miss apprehensive...

Lisa was sitting in the booth with the students, trying to keep them in order.  She had sat in on more than one recording session, and had a general idea how to use some of the equipment.

She fell in love.

Lisa grinned through the glass at Kelsey.  She motioned for a student to hit the stop button on the console, and pressed the talkback button.  That was amazing, Kel.  Get in here, you have to listen to this.

Kelsey smiled and shook her head, taking the headphones off and hanging them from a spare mic stand.  She entered the production studio that she knew so well, almost better than her own home, and grabbed an empty chair, spinning it around so that when she sat, her arms were wrapped around the back of it.  Her face didnt display much emotion when she listened to the playback, except for when the last four words she had recorded came over the speakers.  She smiled and blushed slightly when she heard herself admit to falling in love.  Thats enough for today guys, well continue this tomorrow morning.

Tomorrow afternoon, Lisa said quickly.

Why afternoon? Kelsey asked, the students suddenly freezing at the thought of getting to sleep in.

Because theres a game tonight.

Kelsey blinked.  What the hell does that have to do with-

Were going, and were all going out to Le Mardi Gras after the game.

Whos we all?

Lisa glanced at the students before answering.  Ill tell you in a minute.  She turned to her small audience.  Dont worry, you can sleep in, she said to them.  Meet here tomorrow at noon, ok?

They nodded and said their okays and goodbyes, and left Kelsey sitting in her chair, blinking at Lisa.  Whos everyone?  Kris didnt mention going to Le Mardi Gras, he said he was just gonna take it easy after the game.  She paused.  In fact, I think he wanted me to stop over after it, and-

Lisa silenced her with a shake of her head.  I hate to say this, but now that youre all social again, youre spending entirely too much time with Kris.  I understand that hes your boyfriend and all but Im your roommate, Im supposed to be living with you, and this is the first time in almost a week that Ive seen you.

Kelsey frowned.  I know And youre right.  Ill go to the game, Ill just tell Kris after that Im going out.  Maybe hell wanna go, too.

Maybe, Lisa muttered, turning to the console.  This is good.  Very good.  Ever think about shopping it to a label? she asked, motioning toward the console.

Miss Independent?  Kelsey paused while Lisa nodded her head.  I dont know, Im not sure that anyone would even want it, Kelsey said, shrugging.

Of course they would, the song is great.  She paused while she rewound the analog tape a few seconds to replay She fell in love.

Kelsey listened to herself, biting her bottom lip.  Kris was officially her boyfriend, they had been dating for three weeks already and had seen each other every day.   She had been avoiding Brooks like the plague ever since she and Kris had made it official, mostly because, as much as she liked Kris, she knew that deep down, she still harbored feelings for Brooks.  As much as she trusted that he wouldnt try anything, knowing that she was with Kris, she didnt completely trust herself around him.  Is Brooksey going?

Lisa raised her brows.  Yeah, he is.  The first three lines are going, with the exception of Mario and your boyfriend because hes anti-social.

Kris is not anti-social, hes been working his ass of lately, you know that.

Yeah, I know.  Lisa glanced at Kelsey, who was picking the dust from a groove on the console.  What jersey do you wanna wear tonight?

Kelsey hesitated before answering.  I think Im gonna wear Brookseys old one, the one I stole last season.

Lisa raised her eyebrows, but said nothing, only nodded.  She quickly changed the subject.  Lets just save this and go for an early dinner, we didnt eat lunch and Im starving.  And I really dont feel like paying nine dollars for chicken fingers and fries at the Igloo.
