| "Nice jersey." Kelsey spun around to see Brooks leaning against the wall of the Luxury Box Level's lobby. She was standing at the window, looking at Pittsburgh's skyline, and she didn't even hear Brooks enter the room. Lisa found someone she knew on the way to the Box level, and had started talking to them, and told Kelsey to run ahead and tell everyone that she would be there soon. No other girlfriends or wives were present tonight, and if they were, they weren't in the lobby at the moment. Kelsey shrugged. "You gave it to me." "Stole it seems to be the more accurate phrase." Again, Kelsey shrugged, turning back to the window. "Good game tonight." "Yeah." When Kelsey made no attempt to move from her view, Brooks walked over to her, standing to her right. He put a hand on her right shoulder, and asked quietly, "Why aren't you wearing Kris's jersey?" Kelsey bit her lip, but made no attempt to remove his hand. "I don't have one. Yours is the only one I have." "Lisa has one." "I wanted to wear mine." She looked over at Brooks. "Besides, you gave me it." "Stole it." Brooks paused for a moment to glance quickly around the room, making sure no one was there. Before she could get another word out to argue with him, he blurted out, "Why are you with Kris?" Kelsey blinked. "Because I like him," she said slowly, as if she were trying to make sense of the words as they were coming out of her mouth. "And he likes me." Brooks squeezed his eyes shut tight for a few seconds, opened them, and removed his hand from Kelsey's shoulder and let it drop to his side. "I like you." He paused for no more than a moment. "Kel, I love you." Kelsey's eyes widened. "No, nah uh, you are not going to do this to me," she said quickly, backing away from Brooks. "I have been avoiding you for the past three weeks because I don't want this confusion and drama from you. And the first time we have something that even resembles a conversation, you pull this shit on me. What the hell, Brooksey?" Brooks was confused. "But... I..." "You wanna know why I'm with Kris?" Kelsey asked, trying desperately not to burst into tears in the midst of her hysterics. "Because he likes me. Because he fucking admits that he likes me. Because he doesn't care about what his teammates think if he goes out with me. Because he doesn't care about Team Drama. That is why I'm with Kris - he made a fucking commitment, and as far as I know, he's not breaking it." Kelsey stopped and took a breath, composing herself. "So that is why I'm with Kris. Because he asked me out, and asked me to be his girlfriend. And Brooksey, I'm sorry to say this, but it's the truth... You never asked me." Kelsey didn't give Brooks a chance to reply, only turned on her heel and walked into the only place that she could think of to get away from Brooks - the women's bathroom. Seconds later, Lisa walked into the room. "Where's Kel?" she asked, looking at Brooks. "In the bathroom," Brooks said, walking over to a couch and practically collapsing on it. Lisa forrowed her brows at Brooks in confusion. "Are you tired or something?" she asked, her curiosity getting the better of her. "It's not like you to be this tired so long after a game." Brooks shook his head and hung it in defeat. "No, I just..." He looked up at Lisa and lowered his voice. "I think I just made the biggest mistake of my life." Lisa looked to the bathroom, then to Brooks. "What did you do now?" she asked, sitting down on the couch next to Brooks. "Don't you wanna get Kelsey so you guys can go and party with your boyfriends?" Brooks asked. He was at the point of preparing himself for a night of sitting in the house, feeling sorry for himself. "No," Lisa said, "Kris isn't going. He called Kel before the game even started and said that he's going home after it, and that he didn't mind if she went out without him. And ya know what? I don't care what you did, you are not gonna sit and feel sorry for yourself, you're gonna go to Le Mardi Gras with me and Matt and Kel and the rest of the guys and you're gonna have a good time, because I am sick of seeing that horrible scowl on your face all the time." "I'm not scowling-" "You're doing it right now." Lisa paused while Brooks rolled his eyes, allowing himself to glance at the bathroom door for a fraction of a second, but Lisa caught it. "Is there something I should know about you and Kelsey?" Brooks frowned. "I don't know if I should be telling you... Your boyfriend is Kris's roommate..." "If you don't want me to say anything to Matt, I won't." Lisa paused. "Brooksey, you can trust me." Brooks hesitated, but answered Lisa. "I kissed her." "When?" Lisa asked, her eyes wide with surprise. "The day she met Kris, that morning in the kitchen." He paused while Lisa's brows forrowed as she tried to remember. "Remember the food fight?" Lisa frowned. "Yes, you two made a mess of my kitchen." Her mouth formed a small "o" as the it hit her. "That's why you left so quickly." "Yeah." Lisa shook her head. "Why the hell didn't you tell me sooner? I wouldn't set her up with Kris, and none of this would've happened." Brooks shook his head and stood up. "Don't worry about it. She's with him now, and there's nothing I can do about it." Brooks tried to walk away, but was stopped. "Why not?" Lisa asked, standing up and grabbing Brooks's arm. "Because right before you walked in and she stormed in the bathroom, she basically told me that since I didn't ask, she's with Kris, and nothing is gonna change that." Brooks paused. "Not even the fact that I love her," he mumbled. "You love her?" Brooks nodded his head. "Yeah. And I told her, and she freaked out on me. So what do you propose I do now, hum?" Toby, Tom, Eric and Rob chose that moment to walk into the lobby. "Ready to go?" Toby asked Brooks, slapping him on the back. "Yeah," Brooks said, plastering a fake smile on his face. "Wait it out," Lisa said quietly as she walked to the bathroom. "I'll be right back," she announced louder, to the group. "We're gonna party tonight," Eric said with a grin, an evil glint in his eye. "Yes we are." Tom laughed. "I, for one, intend on getting myself so piss drunk, that I don't know who the hell I'm waking up next to." "That doesn't sound like such a bad idea," Brooks said in agreement, watching as Kelsey and Lisa emerged from the bathroom. "Not a bad idea at all." |
