Vital Congregations, Just Communities: An Invitation for You
Covenant Lutheran Church,
Wednesday, October 14
11:30 am -1:30 pm
Bishop Bruce Burnside invites you to a free luncheon for clergy and lay persons to learn about how your congregation can both deepen relationships within your church, and connect more fully with the community in which you are. Congregation-based community organizing provides the opportunity to do both of these!
Justice Overcoming Borders (JOB), a congregation based community organizing affiliate in Rock County, which includes several ELCA congregations, and the South-Central Synod of Wisconsin are sponsoring this opportunity to learn about how your congregation could benefit from being a part of community organizing. This luncheon is for everyone who hopes their congregation could have a greater impact in bringing the good news of Jesus Christ into the community around them, and who seeks to build a deeper community of faith.
The presenter will be Milwaukee area ELCA Pastor Dennis Jacobsen, author of Doing Justice: Congregations and Community Organizing. Following lunch and the presentation you will have the opportunity to ask questions and have discussion with Pastor Jacobsen, Bishop Burnside and local pastors who are involved with community organizing. Please join us!
RSVP to the synod office by October 8
(or just come, and we hope to have enough food for all!)
The Stewardship Program is Here!
Stewards living a God-pleasing life are managers of all of God's creation. As owner, God has called us to be responsible as we fulfill the role for which we have been created, to do his will as long as we remain on earth. "For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life." (Ephesians 2:10).
We are not given these responsibilities because of our great talents and abilities. On the contrary, we often feel inadequate and unprepared for the tasks God places before us. Our strength is in the Lord. The Apostle Paul made that point very clear as he gave praise to God for his power within us: "Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to him be glory in the church and to Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever! Amen (Ephesians 3:20-21). As stewards living a God-pleasing life, we welcome our opportunities for stewardship and give all the glory to God.
This month we will be studying the series: “Live a God-Pleasing Life!” in our worship services. We will discuss faith as the foundation for stewardship, for it is only through faith that we can please God. We will delve into the important role that discipleship holds in our lives as faithful stewards. We will study the Scriptures to learn how generosity is the hallmark of grateful stewards responding to the love and generosity of God. Our stewardship program emphasizes the grace of God who has called us to faith and continues to sustain us. Let the words of the writer to the Hebrews be our prayer:
"Now may the God of peace . . . make you complete in everything good so that you may do his will, working among us that which is well pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen." (Hebrews 13:20, 21
During worship you will hear a faith story from a member of our congregation, our High School youth will lead a children’s moment and the message each week will be focused on each theme of the day. Please make every effort to attend the worship services during these three Sundays. May God give you the grace to continue the faithful stewardship of the many blessings that he has entrusted to your care.
Our Commitment Sunday is at all three worship services the weekend of October 10-11, 2009.
LANDSCAPING
Our Thanks to Karen Koberstein,
Landscape Architect Extraordinaire!
Finding the right Landscape Architect to give our fledgling committee direction four years ago has proved invaluable. More than a designer, she has been a mediator, advisor, teacher and encourager. Karen rolls up her sleeves, working right along side us, breathing new life into our landscape. Karen coached us in the selection of low-maintenance, disease resistant plants that would do well in our climate, giving us latitude for personal preferences. She has worked hard to make us smarter gardeners and better designers. We have grown with the plants!
In those crazy, stressful weeks before plants arrive, Karen keeps us mindful of all the details. Everything is in the preparation of the site. The rest is icing on the cake, we have come to realize. She keeps a very cool head amid the unforeseen events that are bound to happen. This makes for a fun time when the plants arrive and the volunteers dig in.
Karen often comments what a personal pleasure it gives her to see Covenant people take ownership in the creation and maintenance of the gardens. She loves to see the good natured humor of the workers. It is personally very satisfying when she can turn folks on to gardening.
Karen has a very busy landscape business in Stoughton called Samara Design. We thank her for the years of wonderful service, for teaching us well, and for greatly enhancing the natural beauty of our church. It’s been a joy working with her.
