What Nate's Up To Now

For our home users Nate is working on setting up a piehole. Perfect for those mom's we all know and who will click on an ad to punch the monkey and accidently download a virus. A piehole is a network wide adblocker. It replaces your router's DNS Service and allows for cool other customizations such as like re-directing queries to different servers so instead of seeing the ad you can see a custom picture. Why is Nate doing this? Why does Nate do anything? Some ads on some websites are malicious, a piehole keeps you safe from ads and malicious software. Finally no more Pop-ups and annoying ads!!! AND it deceases webpage loading time, because the ads don't have to load!REF

We are using a firewall called pf-sense perfect for Businesses which is open source enterprise, grade, and free. It has everything you would expet from a highend source like **CISCO** and it can be installed on a wide rane of hardware. It has plugins so it can do a lot of aditional functions like bandwidth tests, anti-virus scans, and ad-blocking, that just scratches the surface! You can get some really cool data like peak times of usage and fancy routing for a guset Network, all that fun stuff. That only Nate would say is fun.

dd-wrt is a firmware replacement for your home router. You can enable functions using it that would normally cost significant amounts, this is another free product. Most consumer routers stop getting firmware updates a few years after their release. many of them have MAJOR security holes in them. By applying this third party firmware you effectively solve all the scary problems.
