Subject: Has DNA helped you break a brick wall?

. . . has any member of this list actually broken down a brick wall based solely on his DNA tests? If not, have the DNA tests resulted in you searching and finding paper documentation which allowed you to break down that wall? Bruce Baird

I don't know if it would qualify as a 'brick wall' but two members of the BREWER DNA project connected because of a 12 marker match. . .

From: David Wilson
. . .In the case of the Lovelace/Loveless surname project, DNA has been invaluable in breaking logjams and getting us past seemingly hopeless tangles of similarly named individuals from the 1600s and 1700s in MD, VA and the Carolinas. Individual members of the group have indeed broken through brick walls and now see their line of descent three or four generations further back than they could before. First, DNA allowed us to distinguish at least three different and unrelated lines of Lovelaces in North America.

. . . The DNA data has allowed us to disprove some completely false ideas about the early structure of the family that had distorted Lovelace research for over 3/4 of a century. And it has pointed out new directions of research as the old mistakes were put to rest and new relationships were confidently established. . . he matches within the group, but that kind of information does not always flow back to the project coordinators.

From: bearbranch . . In my case, my grandfather was illegitimate, and only a few vague traditions about his father had come down in the family. I slowly worked through the local families that I knew to have had contact with my great-grandmother. I finally found a perfect 37 marker match with a descendant of John J. Peeples.
,. . .[now] I know that my great-great-great grandfather was their father.

. . . Without DNA evidence, I would not be sure of anything.

. . . I have gotten past a brick wall that had been firmly built after 30 years of research with a DNA match.

Julia [email protected] writes: I have eliminated two family groups sharing my surname from possible contention based on my 12 marker test. I had previously devoted much research time to these families.
